What has that got to do with contactless? Someone else could have paid with chip and pin also?

The barmaid tried to stop him but was a fraction of a second late. It wouldn't have happened c&p.

To continue the pub context ...

I had a bite to eat in a pub the other night, followed by a couple of rounds of drinks.

The waitress cleared the table then came back 10 minutes later to inform me that I hadn't paid for the meal, only the subsequent drinks. I had paid and I'd paid with contactless. The waitress had cleaned away the receipts so I had no evidence. The manager couldn't reconcile any payments, she couldn't find the merchant copy of my receipt, because the pub was extremely busy and she was pressed for time. I called the bank, but they had no record of the transaction yet as contactless transactions are sent by the merchant until overnight. So a sour note to an evening and a bit of unwelcome debate.

Incidents like this, and the accidental tap, are far more of an issue to me than any fraud.

I'll be using C&P in pubs now as a result.

Another instance of a pub (they seem to be the worst culprits, along with independent takeaway food outlets) who don't know how to operate their card terminal. A few clicks through the terminal's menus and they could've printed a list of all transactions that had taken place that day.

Whenever asked "is contactless ok", my response is always "only if I can get a receipt". Which is usually answered with "no", therefore I ask for a normal C+P transaction to take place.

In other news, I was greeted in my parent's local last weekend with "I've finally got round to reading the manual, this machine does loads more than I realised and I can now give you a receipt" from the landlord. One merchant edcuated, thousands more to go......

I've read a few times that some posters aren't offered receipts for contactless but that's not my experience. I don't recall a single instance of not being offered a receipt. Perhaps being as I'm in London and it seems that contactless has been here longer and is more widespread staff are better trained.

Whenever I've used contactless I've generally received a receipt (bar the London Underground).

When I was in M&S Simply Food last week and used it the self service checkout asked if I wanted a receipt.

There's little issue in chains and large retailers (except one cashier in WHSmith who got upset when I asked for a receipt). It is the smaller independents with handheld card readers who don't know how to offer receipts.

I've faced this both inside and outside London (but mostly outside).

I get a receipt for all my contactless payments. Its never a problem. This is at pubs, garages, drive throughs. I'm outside london.

Where cant you get a receipt for contactless?

Both pubs near where I work (Cambs-Essex border), at least three non-chain pubs in Cambridge, all four pubs near to my parents house, the canteen at work, the chinese takeaway near me, both Indian and Chinese takeaway near my parents.

I'm not the only one experiencing these problems. There was a massive email conversation going on about this at work recently.

WHSmiths dont issue a receipt for contactless unless you ask them for it, I found this out on Friday, when I bought some items for Brownies, and left with the items to have to go back and get a receipt, (I was given two pieces which I thought was a receipt but was a voucher for 20% off)

They printed me a copy receipt and told me that their systems don't issue them as you have a log of the transaction on your bank card/apple pay..

Although this is the only time I have had this problem, all the other places I have used contactless or apple pay I have had a receipt or not wanted one.

Try using a self-service check-out; in my experience the self-service check-outs at WH Smiths always issue receipts when paying by contactless card.
