As a huge contactless fan, I was super interested to read this thread. After hearing a lot of worry and grumbling about contactless on here, I've still not come across an example of actual fraud.

And I still haven't... I do think more people are griping over this than is necessary - there's still a lot more examples of 'old-fashioned' CC fraud than contactless fraud.

*wait for the links of actual fraud cases to be posted*

There is fraud, but it's being committed against the banks.

By whom and in what way? An unsubstantiated assertion is worthless

One potential area for fraud is when leaving a card behind a bar when running a tab. I have done this on a few rare occasions but wouldn't do so since the introduction of contactless.

It wouldn't take much at all for a barman to take cash from a customer and give the correct change and a few seconds later pay the bill with a card and pocket the cash. If they were to pick the right (i.e. drunk) customer there's every chance that they'd never query it.

Why the old samsung galaxy s3 with the first gen battery is so popular with fraudsters.

Well that was embarrassing...the golf club got back to me and said they didn't recognise the transaction name (it was the name of a golf pro). I then checked Google and it turns out he is a pro at a different golf club and I did indeed spend £19.99 there!

Needless to say a full apology was made. However this has made me think about the possibility of low-level fraud being done this way and I will always make sure I see the amount that has been keyed before swiping the card.

Maybe you should edit your first post to clarify that there was no fraud at all and it was your mistake.

I think gunsandbanjos' point was that fraud is not the customer's liability - it is the bank's. Zero contactless fraud is infeasible. A rudimentary Google search would turn up the fraud statistics showing contactless fraud is much lower than C&P fraud, but not zero.

    For example:
Instances of fraud on contactless cards are extremely rare, with the latest figures showing that contactless fraud totalled £51,000 over the first six months of 2014 - just 0.007 per cent of contactless card spending.

I would imagine so, if the person swiping doesn't see the screen. You spend £5 in a shop, the shop assistant also puts thru £10 cashback, you swipe without looking at a total of £15 and leave; the shop assistant pockets the £10.

So you don't get a receipt to check then?

Of course all shop workers are thieves aren't they.

Stop panic stirring by suggesting scenarios that are in the scheme of things very unlikely to happen.

Actually that wasn't my point, my point was fraudsters are actively gaining contactless cards and using them to commit fraud against banks.

This isn't really related but it didn't seem worthwhile starting another thread...

I was in a very busy bar yesterday evening. It was five deep and took me a good 10-15 minutes to be served. I ordered my drinks and the total was £9.80. The credit card terminal wasn't near me so I handed my card to the barmaid but before she could get to the machine someone else touched their card and paid my bill. He had already finished his round and was in line to pay after me.

Now, I'm sure that I could have insisted that they reverse everything but that seemed a lot of hassle considering how long I had already waited and how many people were behind me. Luckily I had a tenner on me so handed it to him. A nice 20p profit for him!

It would have gone some way to my TSB £100 but it doesn't matter as I'll get there easily anyway. It's just a bit frustrating.

What has that got to do with contactless? Someone else could have paid with chip and pin also?
