Me, again. Hope you don't mind but I've been looking at this recommended pulled pork recipe and there are a number of ingredients I don't have (highlighted in blue). I have two questions:
    • would it stop the sauce thickening properly if I swapped powdered ingredients for 'real' ones like celery, onion and garlic?
    • if I did buy them in would I use them for anything else?

    Ingredients
    • For the barbecue sauce:
    • 1 cup (240ml) of passata
    • 1 cup (240ml) of water
    • 1 small onion, sliced
    • 2 cloves of garlic crushed
    • 1 tablespoon of cider vinegar
    • 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar
    • 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
    • 2 tablespoons of maple syrup (4 syns)Would golden syrup work?
    • 3 tablespoons of soy sauce or coconut aminos
    • 1 tablespoon of paprika
    • 2 teaspoons of chilli powder
    • ½ teaspoon of onion powder
    • ½ teaspoon of garlic powder
    • ¼ teaspoon of mustard powder
    • ¼ teaspoon of celery seed
    • 2 teaspoons of liquid smoke (optional) or use some smoked paprika for the smoky taste, add a little and taste to preference
    • Olive oil spray
    • For the pulled pork:
    • 1kg (2.25lbs) of pork tenderloin or pork shoulder (fat removed)
    • 1 red pepper sliced
    • 1 green pepper sliced
    • 1 onion sliced
    • 4 x 60g (4x2oz) whole wheat rolls (4 x HEb’s)
    • Barbecue Sauce, from above
    • Salt and Pepper

I guess the only problem with using actual onions, garlic and celery would be the physical presence of them in the sauce, i.e. they'd make it bitty. I buy garlic and onion powder and use it to make fajita spice so there are further uses for them. Not sure about celery salt, you probably wouldn't notice if you didn't use it, with all those other ingredients. Same goes for cider vinegar, although I've seen recipes that use it with pork dishes. Golden syrup would be fine IMO.

It's perfectly possible to carry on without going to group wiggly and although I've never tried it myself I've not heard any positive reports from anywhere about online membership. I suppose it depends on how much you want to spend and as a mse thread we shouldn't be advocating wasting money. Where I live there are 2 or 3 groups on most days in some part of the city including 5.30 p.m. groups but you'd only have time to weigh and go so other than online access to syns there's little point. I suppose another option is to pay for childcare once a week if DH is away but that's all adding to the expense. Why not try going alone (with the help of this lovely thread of course) and see what happens.

Looking at your menu for today wiggly, I hope you manage plenty of Speed for lunch as I can only see side salad and an apple so far. Although (without trying to confuse you) if you had no meat it could be a Green day.
I will have fruit and yogurt for pudding with my kids (berries is the plan tonight) and you've not seen the size of the salad I'm planning :rotfl:

but tbh you've hit the nail on the head there. I don't eat enough speed atm. Thats where I'm hoping this thread will help - give me some new ideas. I used to eat it, but being home alone with the kids (one is only 1 so very demanding) means I have such little time to plan or cook I've got really lazy.

No idea about lunch, still at work.

I think I might give it a go on my own though I love the app for looking things up on the fly whilst I'm out and about. I'll have a think this weekend at least

    Hello everyone,

Just a quick question, how do you syn wine you are cooking with? I have put at least two glasses into a beef dish, and whilst the alcohol will cook off, what about the rest etc. I have said 2 syns as the amount of meat I have used is huge so pro-rata it can't be much more....?

Happy b'day Lantanna, are you going to have a few wine syns?

Rampant Recycler I've been Money Tipped!
Thanks for the suggestions, I ended up having beef and peppers in black bean sauce with noodles. I only ate about half of it anyway.

Weigh in was Wednesday and I lost 9.5lbs!! Absolutely over the moon so I'm determined to do well this week, 4.5lbs and I get my stone award!

RE: raffles in group - our SOTW gets the basket of Free food, but if they don't stay after being weighed we do two raffle draws so one person gets the basket and the other person gets either £5 to spend in the shop, or a free week. We forgot how much the raffle cost this week so accidentally put too much money in so we get a free raffle next week :rotfl:

Welcome to Wiggly and Lulu. Congratulations on the twins Lulu I remember you from the TTC thread. Well done for getting on the SW wagon so quickly. I cannot even begin to imagine how anybody copes with two babies at the same time!

Thanks! I remember you too, I hope all is well?

I had to sooner rather than later as I'd never do it if I didn't start now. Being off work is immensely helpful.

Two babies isn't too hard. The trick is to put them on the same schedule so they want feeding at the same time. They only wake us up twice in the night (last night was midnight and 4am, big improvement for us!). I take them out on a walk every day as well so that keeps me sane whilst also contributing to Body Magic!

Celery salt is really nice to dip boiled eggs in or mixed into egg mayo. I often put a bit in soups and couscous too. It adds depth to things like bay leaves do iyswim - it doesn't taste like bay though.

Wow lush and tete, those are brilliant losses!:T
lush, you really seem to be on a roll at the moment. The dress will need lots of taking in at this rate. Pleased to hear that your OH is watching his own weight too (or at least you're watching it for him;)) might save you some work doing different foods too.

Thanks maman :) ideally I want to be sitting somewhere around 11st 10lb (2 stone down from when I bought the dress) at the time of my fitting which will be around the second week of August so another 18.5lb to shift to get there :) aiming for my old target of 10st 10 over all (may drop it to 10 7 as I get closer) but I'm not pressuring myself to get there before the wedding as I'm sure there will be a familymoon gain and then there's time after we get back to chase target down before Christmas :)

happy birthday Lantanna - sorry I forgot to include that earlier!

lunch at the event wasn't so bad - small glass of orange juice, 2 big potato wedges and three sandwiches (smaller than palm of my hand). not stressing over the syns as it's a low syn tea tonight and then loads of body magic planned for the weekend :)

Happy birthday lantanna! Forgot that in my earlier post. :D

maman, I think your substitutes are fine. Is it an American recipe? I find they tend to use powdered onion (etc) a lot more than fresh - maybe it's cheaper? As Lois said, it'll make the sauce bitty but you could strain/whizz it after mixing if it bothers you.

STS at new group. Not sure what I make of the members yet but can always weigh and run if I find it's not my thing. I don't feel bad doing that on a workday, since I obviously have to get back to work! Consultant is nicer at least, although I didn't agree with some of the things she said. I tend to do my own thing (within plan limits of course) anyway so that doesn't really matter. :rotfl:
