I prefer the pine bed sort of frame with a decent mattress. So my bed frame cost little 30 years ago, seem to cost around £100 for a double now, and I paid £500 for my recently bought latex mattress but I wouldn't pay that for the spare room.

Spare bed frame was free (neighbour was getting rid of a double to make room for 2 singles) and new mattress cost £240. Its the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on and every guest who sleeps in that bed remarks on how great it is.

Use freecyle to get a bed frame for free. If you can't get a mattress on freecycle then just buy a new mattress.

Depends on the mattress, but whatever, don't buy Argos' item ref 162/8687- 'Finn 6 Drawer Single Cabin Bed ' with 6-drawers under it.

I'm ace at DIY and can assemble IKEA kit blindfold, but the ARGOS bed included about 500 components and took me seven hours with power tools to put together... including re-carpentering badly designed joints and drawer liners and emailing Karl and Heidi (yes really) in the manufacturer (Flexa in Denmark) for some missing bits! (Karlwas charmingly apologetic by the way and wrote perfect English, albeit that he signed off "Med venlig hilsen")

    Or try IKEA

We've just ordered a spare bed- got a oak frame off Gumtree for £80,) and mattress was £149. We previously had a cheap ikea sofabed, and tbh it was so uncomfortable we didn't invite people to stay unless they were desperate
  • I would imagine you find the amount people spend on a spare bed directly correlates with their income.
  • Just a thought for you (as you live alone maybe not so relevant) but we are a couple living in a 3 bed and are getting a sofa bed for the second bedroom and turning it into a ''man cave'' which can turn into a bedroom when people stay. It seems a waste of a room to only be used when people visit. Why not turn it into a second living room in the meantime with a nice sofa bed?

I spent £136 on a faux-leather ottoman bed (lifts up with storage under) off ebay. There are always loads of options. If the bidding goes over what you want to pay, just wait for the next one - they'll put another up straight away. I think my limit was £150 or so. Wasn't too painful to put together, just a bit of logic and patience! Mattress was from dreams.

Other room has a gorgeous metal bedframe which I got for £40 on a local FB selling site. Mattress was a 'comfort' one from Argos and very inexpensive.

Some nice bedframes on achica.com today. You'll need to join. It's free. Lots of good deals - but double check them against shops/Amazon too. I went to buy bedding once but actually found it cheaper elsewhere.

This is my bedding - looks far more expensive than what it is. Everyone comments on it. We have the quilt on top too https://www.cleverboxes.com/catherine-lansfield-white-silver-gatsby-quilt-cover-set-double.html?gclid=CMqDsuXvvcwCFQUq0wodiVwN9Q

Get a bed with storage. You'll appreciate the bed doing something for 95% of the year when it's not being used!
