How much to spend on a spare bed?

  • Hi,

as this is a money saving forum, don't waste money on a spare bed that might be used 3/4 times a year and would need sheets/duvet/ changing.

If someone is good enough to stay at your house then just share your bed, and to save even more money, shower or bath together in the morning.

Whatever you buy, sleep in it for a couple of nights before you have other people to stay to make sure it's comfortable.

Friends of ours had to use their spare bed on one occasion and went out the next day and bought a new mattress - neither had been able to sleep because the mattress was so uncomfortable. They had had loads of visitors to stay but they'd all been too polite to comment on the awful bed.

Buy a nice bed to your own taste/comfort , then put your existing one in the spare room.

When I lived alone in a 3 bed house, I did exactly this. I spent about £1700 on the new bed and mattress for myself. The other bed and mattress cost about 500.

You can spend as much or as little as you like.

Smaller independent retailers often have good deals on good brands, especially when a new range is due for release.

If you are going to buy a bed and mattress, use google with the word 'cheapest' in front to make sure you are getting it for the best price.

I am not sure it would ever sell at the supposed original price however. I can't find this particular item looking quickly on google but I am pretty sure if you looked for other silent night mattresses you could get one as good or better, even with a frame, for a lot less. Last time I bought a mattress I used a silent night outlet shop but there always seems to be an online mattress site with a sale on lol.., even silentnight's own.

I bought a reasonable quality branded mattress this way and saved a fortune.

I too have stayed at a friends without a wink of sleep and I'm not known for being a mattress snob (then) lol.

Now, I'd always advise going for a well known branded mattress after reading about iffy firms recovering second hand mattresses and them becoming unuseable in short order. Yep I experienced that myself when I didn't have much money. Never again!

I wouldnt buy from Argos to be honest, Go to a proper bed shop

My other suggestion is to buy one of those single beds with another single bed underneath that pulls out

This can be or 2 friends as t singles or pushed together to make a king size for a couple

We did this and its brilliant and there is plenty of room when there are no visitors becuase there is only in effect a single bed
You can get these for around £300 and a good haggle or free delivery.

My main bed is similar to the one listed in the OP (from Argos) and tbh it's fine, perfectly comfy, never slept better.

Maybe I'm easily pleased ;) but I've no issues with Argos.

Like your second suggestion though, and off to check out for myself and the spare room...!

We spent about £450 on a sofabed that is made with a proper mattress, because our 'spare' bedroom is also an everything else room. No way I'd amke my guests sleep on a bed I wouldn't be happy in, and I'm quite fussy! Nearly everyone has commented on what a comfortable bed it is, so clearly a good choice :)

[FONT=&quot]I would be interested to hear from other people who live alone. How much did you spend on a "spare" bed?

It was from Argos, £150 inc. mattress.

Seems fine to me (did sleep in it myself once just for variety). Have been considering either a fold down one or something to free up some floor space, though.

I would suggest getting the bed from a charity shop. You should be able to get a decent mattress for maybe £100.
