I'm embarrassed as anything, and if you saw my first post you will know that I am attempting to re over from severe anxiety!

So I have been taking control for just a few days, needed some food for the weekend, checked what was left in my budget and went to aldi on the way back from school.

In there I lost count of how much id spent so pulled my trolley out of the way, and used my calculator on my phone to re add everything.

Cue horrible woman, tutting and glaring at me ( I assume I was in her way ) and as she walked of she turned and said 'if you are so broke you have to add it up live off your fat for a while'

Just exactly the boost I needed NOT!

I realise its her problem, not mine, but comments like that knock you back:(

Just wanted to tell someone and its amazing how open you can be on a forum.

    Cheel xx

    I can lose weight, you'll still be a c***

    the ultimate response!
I was going to suggest a similar Winston Churchill-ish reply along the lines of:
    "Yes well, one day I'll be thin but you'll still be a rude, unpleasant b i t c h".
  • Any time someone is gratuitously unpleasant I just think "I wonder what's going on in their life? They are doing the equivalent of 'kicking the cat' ". It's surprising just how often it is indeed the case that a very quick "look at their life" will reveal the reason is to do with them not you. But that's no excuse for acting that way to a complete stranger one has just clapped eyes on for the first time - as many people have got "something bad" going on in their life.

I've also decided to remember the smile/wink/kiss way of dealing with things. I like the way I deal with it currently - but that sounds even better and I shall consider that one hereby "adopted".

Most people are fine, its just the odd ones that go through life getting a kick out of being rude and nasty to others. I know how you feel and it can leave you very shaky for a while when its only just happened.

Cheel, don't let some gobby git grind you down and congratulations on the weight loss !

I hope I never run across her in the supermarket, then, as I regularly tot things up on my PDA on the way round. If I have a "spend £30 and get £3 off" type coupon, I try and get my spend to just £30, which may mean buying an extra non-perishable item to put by for later; and, I'm sorry, but my mental arithmetic just ain't what it was.:D

Cheel take no notice; as has already been said, she was probably having an off day, and you were simply the unfortunate person who got the mouthful of abuse she was going to dish out at some point. x

Cheel, what a horrible thing to happen to you. I'm sure I would have been upset too if someone said such awful things to me.

You are making a difference in your life by taking control both of your finances and your weight. Well done for making baby steps :j it's where we all started.

That person must have a sad life to think it's ok to speak to anyone in that way.

Don't worry about her any longer, and if you do come across her in the shop in the future, ignore her or tell a member of staff if she starts on you again.

Lots of hugs coming your way! :grouphug:

It was absolutely unforgivable behaviour, but it really does help to mentally tot things up as you go round. I just round up or down to the nearest pound and it really does work and I have often managed to challenge the till person because I know when an inflated price is wrong. I think the woman in this case must have mental health issues, because that just isn't the sort of thing you come out with to a total stranger, is it?

Oh dear, I have done exactly the same thing - lost track and stood to the side so I can go over it again.
Although you are more likely to add up when you are broke - as getting it wrong is more devastating - I do it both out of habit and a desire to keep track.
My mother could do it all in her head to the nearest penny - she was the generation that grew up before supermarkets and would challenge the checkout staff. I'm not so good at mental arithmetic, and do as previous posters have said - round to the nearest pound.

I too wonder what is going on with her, but at the moment OP all you need to do is say, in your head DISMISS! Which is what you've done, by going on here.

There seem to have been a number of posts on other forums recently about the dreadful situations even quite comfortably off people get themselves into by not keeping track of their finances - so keep it up!

PS: reminds me of people who beep and/or flash their lights if I've made a mistake on the road - if I've caused you so much trouble, you wouldn't have the time to rant at me!

How awful - what a horrid person.

I too, use my calculator when going round the supermarket, totting up as I go, and have had strange looks but I blank them.

I get even stranger looks, as I also take a magnifying glass with me and spend ages peering at the small print on stuff!! I also carry a shopping list and biro!

Nobody has actually said anything to me yet about it, if they did, I would glare and carry on with my shopping. I just don't get it these days, why some folk think they are entitled to pass some derogatory remark, involving something which has nothing to do with them whatsoever.

I do get a few huffs and puffs now again, when someone wants to shop quickly and I'm in their way, but I then just move to one side and let them get on with it.

I would say, there was a touch of jealousy with this woman too, she was probably thinking, 'why didn't I think of that'.

Carry on my dear, you are doing just great, don't be put off. You're saving money, and that's all that counts.
