In Cornwall the rule of thumb is oft-quoted as 400 years.

    You misunderstand.
The 'rule of thumb' in Cornwall, pertains to having an extra thumb.
No better way of proving your Cornish heritage apparently.:)

  • London is always changing; the world's great cities don't stay static.

There will always be young people willing to live scruffily and cheaply in exchange for a buzz in their twenties. There will always be rich types in the posh bits. There will always be !!!! Whittingtons from all over seeking their fortune.

What I think there will definitely be fewer of are ordinary families in middle ranking jobs, as the cost of a bog standard 3 bed in zones 4-5 becomes only possible for those on top salaries. I have mentioned this before, but I do think it's pertinent: I work in one of the UK and world's top rated universities and there is top level discussion at preventing the loss of lecturers in their 30s to rival institutions in cheaper areas, especially Germany. We need people at this stage of their career to span the gap between young post-docs and senior academics approaching retirement, to take over groups and turn research in new directions. It's interesting that the UK's top universities (Oxbridge, Imperial, UCL and LSE) are all in areas with high housing costs. Can these institutions continue to thrive if a core level of staffing is thinned? Higher education is one of the few things we're still good at.

I've lived in London for roughly 14 years. I go for brunches and drink craft beer. Sadly I don't have a beard. When do I qualify as native?

When you move to Shoreditch ;)
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

Do people think that native English people will be just priced out of london by both foreign investors and immigrants?

    "will"

    ...?
  • Its happened In my area (Harrow) white people have totally moved out over the last decade and now you see no English in the whole borough, taken over by immigrants and Harrow now looks like a slum (excluding North Harrow). I speak as a non-white

Forced to leave? they gladly did with a bag full of ££$$ smiling all the way to stoke-on-trent where they bought twice the house for a third the money

One family I know, man wife and 3 grown up 'kids' moved from Hackney to Telford. Sold their terrace house for close to £1m and bought 4 homes in Telford (one for each kid and one for themselves) and still had the best part of half a million in the bank!

London rise has been nothing but fantastic to old Londoners and often their children too like in the above family.

Out of interest, how did these non-white slum-makers afford to price out decent people of any colour that wanted to live in Harrow do you think?

Does this mean that you are including yourself in the group of slum-making foreigners that have taken over the Borough?

I think what you might describe as white British born and bred Londoners have already left in droves.

Between 2001 and 2011 the population of London rose by 1.5 million but the white British population fell by a net 600,000 according to the census. A few of the professional middle classes occupying some of the nicer areas but a complete disappearance in many other areas - only the outer fringes of boroughs like Havering and Bromley and Kingston now bear any relationship to the demographics if the early 1990s.

As John Cleese said - and he was wildly criticised for doing so - London is no longer an English city. In my area I would probably say there were more young Spaniards or Poles or Romanians - than young white Brits.

Whether you like it or not it's a matter of fact - and many who don't have spoken with their feet and left. House prices are only one factor in this.
