What happens if you have lost your first NI card? I know my number but can't for the life of me remember where the card went.
I remember when this was just a little website! :money:

I have NEVER had an NI card - at some point I was assigned a number (probably when I first signed on as a student) but have never needed a card (and I'm now in my 40s).
Out of interest can anyone tell me what this card is used for?

 I was told that there was no legal obligation to change your name to your spouse's name

(And you don't *have* to have a wedding ring either).

Quite right Queenie. One of my bugbears is all the "MUSTS" and "SHOULDS" surrounding weddings and marriage, when all you really HAVE to do is turn up, do the deed, get it witnessed, and do your best to keep your marriage vows. (Thanks for letting me get that off my chest....again! :D)

I'm using my maiden name as an extra middle name, which confuses some people no end (even after several conversations and explaining it in writing to her, the wages clerk at work still had me down with a double barrelled surname......which would make my surname very long indeed!)

I haven't informed half the people I should have of my new name yet (got married in September), but I'm getting there slowly. Lots of women continue to use both names, and I'm still me, just with an extra name on the end, so I'm not too worried. ;)

It's covered in the list I linked to in my earlier message
THIS LIST is actually for a house move, but most would apply to a name change, I think. Seems pretty comprehensive and I'm all for not "reinventing the wheel"
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)

Just to point out (because it's something I fretted about immensely after I married Mr Ribena) that your maiden name is legally forever yours and if it takes you 6 months to do all the name changing, don't worry! :)

I got it into my head that now I was married it was legally (not ethically or emotionally) wrong to continue using my maiden name, but not so :D

After all, HE can take YOUR name if that's what you both want or you can become Mr and Mrs but keep your own names. I have a friend who when on her own is Mrs (maiden name) but jointly you send letters to Mr and Mrs (his name).

If the worst comes to the worst, wait until you get letters addressed to you in your old name, then tell them. Just gets lots of photocopies of your marriage cert. to send as proof.

no he can't a man is not legally entitled to use his wife's maiden name, if he wants to it has to be changed by deed poll, a woman is the only one entitled by law to take her husbands surname. my h2b and i looked in to this as my surname is better than his!! now we've agreed i'll take his name.
