Money Moral Dilemma: Is it OK to snap off the broccoli stalk before weighing it?

You can also save money through ripping off banana skins, tearing chicken breast from whole carcasses and so on.0

So it's okay to steal from large shop as 'they can take the hit' but not from small ones? Stealing is stealing - a criminal offence.
to steal - 'to take the property of another without permission'. since OP is paying for what they are taking, it is not stealing.
basic transaction theory dictates that a shop sets the price for a good, and we pay it. once we pay the asked price, the good becomes ours.
in this case the good is done by weight. if OP doesn't want some of it, then they are free to remove until such time they are happy with the product. then they weight it, then they make the transaction.
All this talk about 'stealing' and 'it'll mean higher food prices' is frankly absurd and you are all daft for thinking it. are you not aware of how much wastage there is in food, especially fruit and veg? this is minor and leaves the stalk free for anyone else who wants it.0 -
As other people have noted - I understand why you would want to do it, and I suspect you will continue to do so.
But in my opinion, it's wrong.
There's loads of examples where you pay more but parts you won't eat or use. Not just food, but products too.
The best example I have seen is the banana - you wouldn't peel it before buying because you don't eat the skin...
The cost difference isn't going to be more than 5p so the time you have spent doing it has been wasted.
Time is money. I see people who will wait at a train station for over an hour, just to save £5. Would you work for £5 an hour? No, didn't think so.0 -
Nothing wrong with it. I do it all the time0

I think we can ignore the 'moral' dilemma of denying the hard up supermarkets of revenue, they are not suffering as a result of people doing this. I wouldn't put it past supermarkets to insist dead weight is kept on loose produce so they can make more money.
Why not direct your ire at the supermarkets who create far more wastage by refusing produce from suppliers that don't meet ridiculous attractiveness criteria. Resulting in a huge level of food waste. Do you scold them for effectively ripping off their suppliers. Let's also not forget Tesco's habit of not paying suppliers and extending payment terms many months therefore crippling their smaller suppliers.
Look at the amount the happily throw out in the bins and taint the produce to prevent people taking them. They already threw it away but if they didn't make money on it god forbid giving it away to charities.
Look at yourselves for the way you shop, buying everything packaged to the hilt. We're happy to buy everything uniform and in neat packaging, but the mark up is incredible, it is the same item, trimmed and tarted up and the margin more than makes up for someone snapping off a broccoli stalk. Just check out the difference in the price per kilo from a packaged item to loose.0 -
You're all amateurs. I open and drink the "10%extra free"portion of any cans of beer showing that promotion!0

The broccoli is priced to include the stalk so no, it's not acceptable to remove the stalk as the shop will be unable to sell it.
I buy leg of lamb. I don't eat the bone. If I buy it with the bone in, it's cheaper per kilogramme than if I buy it 'boneless'.digital0 -

But it's not working, and it would be saving me £5. It's not as if when I finish my journey I can spend the hour I've saved by working for an hour and making more money. Not Rachmaninov
