I don't get it! Why would you not want to eat the stalk?
Once you've cut the tuff outside off the stalk and cut it in to bits and cooked it you'll learn that the stalk of broccoli is juicy and delicious and packed full of nutrients just liked the heads.
It's the best tasting bit of the broccoli!0 -
It's not theft because you aren't taking the stalk for free, you're leaving it the shop and paying for what you took!
But you are taking the florets at the price set for the whole head (florets and stem).
If you just want the florets, buy the packs of florets (which are sold at a higher price per kilo because the thick stalks have been removed).
It's similar to taking organic or specialist produce and passing it off as the lower priced alternative.0 -
What a waste. Stalk is the best bit. I also use the stalk and the inner leaves on cauliflower leaves in soups.0

Yes, I also stand there an peel the potatoes and carrots before I buy them too - every little helpsFeb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

I tend to consider the stem as the most nutritious part. I'm now wondering whether it'd be ok to snap off the florets and just pay for the stems. Although, I guess I'd want to peel off the overly-fibrous parts of the stems too!0

Years ago when I first got married you used to be be able to buy mushroom stalks separately in our local greengrocers and because we were hard up that' s what I always bought because they were half the price of whole mushrooms They were no different in flavour. Wish I could still buy them for soups and casseroles! (Not that I'm encouraging anybody on here to do a bit of mushroom decapitating in supermarkets).0

I try to choose well proportioned pieces - I like the stalk but there are occasions when all that is on offer is broccoli with a massive thick stalk and not much in the way of florets. In those instances VERY occasionally I do break off some - not all - of the stalk. I know other people do it because I see broken off stalks lying there every time I go to the supermarket.0

No. That is taking money saving to Scrooge levels and is not necessary at all.
Just buy frozen. Saves on water bills when washing the fresh Broccolli.
God Almighty.
Certainly appreciate what you are saying about the money saving, not too sure about the blasphemy though; had this phrase referred to a different religion, I'm pretty sure there would be cries of "racism"!Owed @ LBM, including mtg: £85961.15, As of 1st August 2016: £14481.01 :j
September 2016; out of debt and have savings for the saddest reason. RIP Aunty, I'll never forget you:(
Never begin a sentence with "And". Unless you are the Goo Goo Dolls that is.0 -
I like a bit of broccoli stem, however
-do you peel the leaves off cauliflowers?
-what about Brussels sprouts?
-Onions?
-Ginger? (although you already snap this off and I suspect many people look out for a nice fat bit and get rid of all of the small pieces)
-leek tops?
I mean, really?
And thank you Mojisola, you've made a very good point!0 -
No, it's not acceptable to break off the stalk, which then goes to waste. Eat it & don't be a baby.0
