Money Moral Dilemma: Is it OK to snap off the broccoli stalk before weighing it?

This is stupid on two counts. Why are you being dishonest and why can't you eat the broccoli stalks? This is hardly a money saving dilemma, it is simply a ridiculous question from somebody who wants something for nothing.0

So do I, and have a quick look for and discard any soft or mouldy ones.0 -

NO!
Absolutely not. That's like trying to buy filleted fish at the on-the-bone price.
If you look into your conscience (if you have one), you will realise that you have asked this question because you know - in your heart of hearts - that it is dishonest.
Ease your conscience and pay the due price - Divot!0 -
The stalk is perfectly edible, removing it is seriously taking the p, what next, peeling bananas and coring apples before theyre weighed ?0

But the stalk is the best bit! I would recommend peeling off the tough outer layer then steaming the inside with the rest of the broccoli - it's delicious!
I absolutely agree the stalk has far more flavour and is a nicer texture than the heads when cooked - it matters not a jot to me though as our local store charges the same with or without the stalk.
I know we all like saving money but snapping the stalks off seems excessively penny pinching and I doubt the stalks get sold by themselves so leave it on next time and try cooking it as we do - you may be pleasantly surprised (but leave any woody bits out).0 -
If I need to buy enough bananas to last for a week I must confess to often buying them in two batches, nearly ripe and as green as I can find them which does sometimes mean pulling two or three bananas off a larger green clump. I find that otherwise they ripen so quickly that nobody will eat the overripe bananas at the end of the week and not everybody wants to be making banana bread all the time.
Is anybody else guilty of this heineous crime? I wish somebody would come up with a magic solution to prevent bananas ripening too quickly. It must be a major wastage area for supermarkets and greengrocers.0 -

I am sure I have seen supermarkets selling "eat me, keep me" packets of fruit, where some of the fruits are are ripe and ready to eat and others need to be "ripened at home"
This thread has been a revelation! I never knew broccoli stalks were so contentious- I also never knew they were edible. I couldn't bring myself to stalk-snap in a store, and I always throw the stalks away. No more though! I will be following the tips above and cooking them from now on.
I never throw away the cauliflower stalk though. I love it's peppery crunchiness and always munch on it while cooking the rest of the dinner0 -
I was about to ask why is the stalk there in the first place. I've always said to SWMBO that it's a rip-off. She just nods as having heard it so often.
Well now I know, not realising that it's also edible, I'll surprise her the next time I prepare the veg, in the steamer or roaster it'll go. :T0 -
I think if you are ok doing this then you have to be ok with the supermarket taking the approach to raise prices accordingly to account for itRegards
