I think if you are ok doing this then you have to be ok with the supermarket taking the approach to raise prices accordingly to account for it
They do. It's accounted for in the percentage they allow for in the headline price.

You don't think that supermarkets allow for that?

    They do.

I saw a lady in Sainsbury this morning at the section with mixed sized economy eggs, moving the largest eggs to her box.

That explains why some boxes have only small ones in them!

I confess to checking the boxes so I get ones that have some larger ones in them, but would never move eggs from one box to another

Depends on the size of stalk - some are bigger than the the florets so off they come. Smaller ones are left on, especially if I am making soup.

I also rummage at the back of the shelf to find the stuff with the longest 'use by' date? Is that theft as well?

I'd have been tempted to tap her on the shoulder and whisper "You do realise that the secret CCTV cameras are recording what you're doing, don't you? If they catch you more than once you get banned from the store".:rotfl:

No that's a different matter. The moral ill-deed is shifting towards the supermarket when they are contriving to entice you to buy the older product before the newer. They should not shelve it if it is not available for sell.

If I need to buy enough bananas to last for a week I must confess to often buying them in two batches, nearly ripe and as green as I can find them which does sometimes mean pulling two or three bananas off a larger green clump. I find that otherwise they ripen so quickly that nobody will eat the overripe bananas at the end of the week and not everybody wants to be making banana bread all the time.

Is anybody else guilty of this heineous crime? I wish somebody would come up with a magic solution to prevent bananas ripening too quickly. It must be a major wastage area for supermarkets and greengrocers.
Green banana _pale_ I buy the ripest looking bananas that I can - or I buy a couple of bags of the 'eat me' and keep them till they're ready for eating.

But this is how I managed my cupboards at home? Newest stock goes to the back and the older produce is used up; I wouldn't dream of chucking anything just because it's a bit older than the other stuff! It's still perfectly edible. Now, if it were ON date, then I'd agree.

And no, I'm not a stalk snapper. It's one of my daughter's favourite foods and we peel and slice the stalks thinly and snack on it while waiting for dinner.

My girlfriend was shocked to see me break off the stalk before weighing it when we were shopping recently. I'm not going to eat that part and it saves on the price - is that not okay?

    It's theft !
Seen someone change Apple labels from variety to another to save a few pennies a kilo.
    Also theft.
Hope those that do it get caught and banned from store or even prosecuted.

I've bought broccoli with a long stalk specifically to use it to make broccoli & Stilton soup and/or broccoli & potato curry. For the latter I use the same recipe as cauliflower and potato curry.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)
