My point being that farmers have normal cars for normal use. Yes they might have a Defender or Fourtrak or similar for towing etc.
But for run of the mill usage it isn't a case of nothing but a 4x4 will do.
Indeed, but your implication was that not even farmers need a 4x4 as they can use a standard hatchback. The point is that for some farm (and consumer) uses, a 4x4 *is* needed. Visiting the Lake District probably isn't one of them, though.0 -
I don't think I explained myself very well Herloz.
It made sense in my head before I wrote it!
My point was that farmers don't need them for regular usage, up and down farm tracks, obviously off road and field use is another thing.
Though loads of farmers have gone the quad route for most off road stuff, when previously they would have had a Defender or Fourtrak etc, probably due to running costs, and have tractors for the heavier stuff.
My brother in laws Dad had a quad when they first came to the my home town back in the 90's.
Having been to Ghana several times and owning property and a farm there I would say that you can get buy pretty well without a 4x4 there aswell. You might spend a lot of the day scraping the underside on speed bumps, if you saw the Top Gear program when they drove across Africa in estate cars you will have seen the speed bumps I am talking about.
I am still going to buy a 4x4 for my own use, Nissan Hardbody, L200 or Duster are in the frame of buying new in Ghana, anything from a Disco 3 to a Freelander or Kia Sorento or Hyundai Terracan (based on an old Shogun) are under consideration of buying in Germany and shipping over.
But as I have said all along if somebody wants a 4x4 then they should crack on, life is too short to worry just about what you need all the time. If you want one buy one.0 -
Fiat panda with 4x4? Or the Suzuki swift with the on/off 4x4 action?/they are more "all weather" cars than anything proper 4x4y but might give the oomph you want on peak district roads without compromising economy too much.Emergency savings: 4600

Just to add to this, due to a small gripe I have developed over the past week........
If you buy one of these things and set off venturing down narrow and sometimes muddy country lanes, the least you can do is drive at a normal speed and don't hold up the folks who bought sensible cars. AND when passing in the opposite direction, just move over slightly, if I can get my Vectra into and through mud, THEN SO CAN YOU! People who bought sensible cars might just shout at you a bit in these situations..... Just saying.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Cost £3000 when it was 4 years old, fully loaded with all the stuff that would be optional extra on a small car, for half the price of a small car the same age. Does 34mpg, only 3mpg less than a 1.2 Corsa and costs less to insure.
Has cost next to nothing in repairs, has only failed an MOT once in 8 years of ownership and has never left me stranded. Had 60k on the clock, now 130k.
Seats 5 adults in comfort, the boot space is absolutely insane with the seats up, I can get luggage for all 5 passengers in there and it will take a 6ft long workbench with the seats down.
If that's not sensible, then I don't know what is“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

If that's not sensible, then I don't know what is
3mpg less than a Corsa 1.2?
What does that have to do with the thread?
And not everybody considers an old Vectra hatch to be a sensible buy, they might not like the low driving position for a start.0 -

This! Exactly this. It's basically a Micra on stilts but you have better visibility in a Micra. And it looks like a dog crouching for a !!!!. Maybe I'm missing something though as every other car on the road seems to be a Juke so maybe they have hidden depths? (But those depths certainly aren't in the boot...)
I'd go for the Fiat 500L Trekking. And, in fact, I probably will do myself when I need to buy a second car for the school run later this year.0
