Not to change the tone too far, but I carry the following (which all pack into a little toiletry bag) whenever I leave the house:

    emergency cash (£20)
Mini first aid kit (bandage, tape, plasters, antibac wipes, aspirin, ziplock bag, gloves, CPR Face Shield)
sewing kit (pre-threaded needles and safety pins)
    whistle
    pen flashlight
    strike anywhere matches
    hard sweets
    plastic poncho
    Vaseline (petroleum jelly)
Swiss Army "Swiss Card" (includes all important tweezers)

    and, obviously my phone.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

House Bought July 2020 - 19 years 0 months remaining on term
Next Step: Bathroom renovation booked for January 2021
Goal: Keep the bigger picture in mind...

And the waterproof backed picnic rug, or a groundsheet :)
Make £2 a day challenge - doing well so far.

I always have some brollies in the car. One small foldable one, and two large golf size ones with spikes. The latter were from Lidl's years ago, and good for taking down to the beach, as well as for protection against rain and sun walking about. Handy to use as a walking aid too when taking visitors round some of the ruins.

Essentials for a picnic bag and cool box for me, are bottles of water, wine, corkscrew, cutlery, plastic plates and bowls, travel mugs, plastic glasses, flask of hot water, coffee, sun cream, wipes, insect repellent, kitchen roll, tissues. Food. Always have first aid kit in the car.

I find you can go most places in the world with a credit/debit card and a passport. It is my husbands philosophy- carry no crap and it works really well. I add a phone but that is it.

Not quite the same though when you are going out for a picnic, otherwise you have to buy everything, at greater cost than you can make at home. The love that goes into making special picnic meals has to be taken into account too, and brings pleasure to the one(s) making and the ones receiving, something money cannot buy.

Of course it is. For a picnic you can get fish and chips at the seaside or go to a local farm shop and buy fresh produce and have gorgeous ham in lovely crusty bread. Grab a pint at a great pub or have a local ice-cream. My money can buy a much better picnic than I could make at home. The op didn't ask about saving money, just what people did. Life is for living - seize the day.

Only myself and OH here so camera, sun cream and hats.

If we take a picnic, then two flasks of tea and coffee. Sandwich, crisps and something for pudding.

Indeed, life is for living, and I do see your point. Perhaps you are not quite getting the point of this forum, which is money saving, as is the whole site.

I love having a lunch out. My idea of a picnic though, is taking food with me. I do both, so I cannot disagree with you totally. I make a much better quiche than a shop bought one, just as an example.
The OP did not ask about saving money, but what to take in a day out bag. Sorry, I think that a credit/debit card and passport is not quite the answer.

I think that you are not getting the point. Money saving isn't about not spending money. It is about getting value for money. That is the whole point of this site that it is for everyone regardless of their circumstances. People ask for advice about £1million houses as they ask for advice about £50k houses.

What to take in a day bag is a passport and a credit card- it was a valid answer. You made it about saving money - not the OP.
