The train does look a favourable option, but the return journey is really expensive. At the moment I have done a dummy booking as advance fares only extend to end of June. To leave at 4.55 am for 3hr journey with 1 change at wilsmslow it's £20 per person but the return journey which would be about 10 am ish ( plane lands at approx 7,30) it's £85.20!!!!!! We can't use f&if card as dis will be 18 and dd 16.

Radiosson blu looks fab but they haven't the room for us as a family and they won't accommodate the car for 21 nights. The price is quite high too, so for the cost of room plus parking I could pay train.

Front runner at the moment seems to be a hotel for £40 approx (hopefully) and then pay a bit more to get parking on airport so not waiting for transfers etc.

Dh doesn't mind the drive, he seems to cope being a shift worker and lorry driver, while I snore sweetly in the passenger seat!!!!!

It would cost too much .... £400 ish .
Dh hired a minibus for his trip up to gatwick ( around same price ) which worked out well with 8 men off on a golfing trip. Each one paid their share.

You can book the outward train and wait until the advanced fares are released for the return.

We've stayed at the Radisson Blu last year, It's convenient for T1 and the Station but it's nothing special, only saving grace is that it's one of the few hotels within the airport that has it's own parking, most hotels, you park overnight then drive to T1 or T2 long stay park up and get the shuttle bus to the terminal to catch your flight and for us, and especially this year, with a disabled person in our group that's too much of a faff, plus in our case we are catching an 06:45am flight. We opted for the Britannia Country House which is about 3 miles from the airport, has on site parking and runs a 24hr shuttle bus service, so we get up in the morning, get on the bus straight to the terminal, no faffing about driving and parking cars in the early hours of the morning. We've used Britannia hotels before for Gatwick and although they are basic, the parking and shuttle service is good and they are usually set in nice surroundings so you can relax outside with a drink (weather permitting) rather than being stuck inside a concrete jungle.

Just done dummy booking for advance train fares.
£160.00 for 4 X singles outward and 4 X singles return. Works out cheaper to buy 2 lots of singles than a return!!!

Hotels with parking with various options ( some with breakfast etc) from£136.00. Premier Inn north, which is currently my fave , out of the hotel and park option, is £140.00.

If we go with the train option, as long as it's that price is August, I hope we don't have a delay on return!!!!

I'm pretty sure the Premier North is one of those hotels I mentioned where you park overnight then drive to the long stay and catch the bus to the terminal, or it's one that you park off airport and get the shuttle bus to the hotel, I know we dismissed it for one of those reasons, it's worth checking what parking is actually offered and what shuttle service is offered.

Looking at information given on Holiday Extras ....

You stay at Premier Inn the night before. There is a £5 car park charge tho.
The next morning you drive to Long stay T2, just along the road on the periphery of the airport, or so the map shows,.
Use shuttle bus from T2 to airport and then the same upon return.
The times are stated on the info something like every 15 mins for a 2 min transfer.

    See post #2.

I recently saw Hotels.com offering room only at The Village in Cheadle for £32 a night. 10 minute drive to the airport. Decent quality.
