It's actually easier to spot forgeries if the notes are all the same way round.

Its easier with a UV light at the counter in Scotland, no mucking about with heads and pens...but the scots were always the brains ;)

UV lights are used in England too, its not just in Scotland, just for the record, :p

Pens are used if suspicious along side though :-)

England caught up then, Head Office in England used to send us pens for English notes, they even tried to start charging the branches for them out our profits. I soon on behalf of the company Scot stores challenged such and that we could just stop accepting English notes, they soon relented :T

It took ages to check bank notes that were not Scots back in the day, if you could find a pen, worse if it was loads of notes, staff had to show on camera above tills all notes were penned. Took ages at times

Interesting as the pens we use don't leave any marks unless they are counterfeit,

Although we have to check the Scottish and Irish notes we get into the bank so its the same for England,

Correct Westie, but staff had to show on camera each note being crossed in pen, because the Scots notes were superior in security and easily checked in a second with UV but English notes were not a raft of English fakes were usually circulating up north.

We had to rip notes and check the silver strip even on brand new notes aswell as pen and check watermarks. 3 checks per English note. Scots 1 sec under a UV light next to till.

The retail companies I worked for deducted loss from fake notes off store profits, Securicor used to collect banking and check them at a central processing point.

Oh how I dont miss my retail days lol, H&S and further Risk Management jobs were so much easier, but hey without the retail management they further jobs would not have came :)

Clydesdale brought the polymer notes to the UK first (when BoE approved them) for Forth Bridge 150 year celebration, given its parent NAB started issuing them in AU circa 1988 it was always going to jump first to remove replacement costs.

In Sept BoE launch their plastic fivers, in 2017 tenners and in 2020 twenty notes.

    When did England get UV?

Can you always spot genuine Clydesdale tenners by the SCIENCEphotoLIBRARY watermark? ;)

I wouldn't know these days my money is all online and chip & pin, rarely withdraw cash now & I only spent 6 years in retail working from part time advisor upto project manager level. That was over 15 years ago now...could not tell a good fake from a real one these days, can tell a fake bank these days though and I just jump ship :rotfl:

I believe it's the most recent set only. I get plenty of old 50s over the counter and these can't be UV tested.

[edit] Just looked at Wikipedia and it looks like everything post-2000, to be technical the revised Series E onwards, has enhanced security.
    : )
