Bank Cashiers

Bank Cashiers.
Why, why , why, when you are handing out money, why don't you ensure that the notes all face the same way?
Took out a cash sum today. Queen Elizabeth was all over the place when I counted the money. Couldn't do anything with it until I straightened it all out.

or may be he was employed under equal conditions for everyone under disability act

Or may be he/she couldn't care less about Liz's face

or he/she was too busy looking at your face

Its not part of the training, but will accomodate when the customer asks.

The focus on on counting the notes out making sure that the customer and you are happy that the amount is correct, and having a conversation with the customer.

I probably get asked once a week to have the notes all the same way but its not something that is automatic when counting out notes.

Would take all week to put all the notes in a ATM the same way...

Would also lead to complaints from some customers about time wasting if a cashier was putting the notes a certain way round.

I worked behind a bar when I was at school and was told to always put the notes in the till the same way around. I wasn't told why but I've always thought that it was to make it better to count at the end of the day. If you don't see the queen's face then the note might be folded and you might therefore be counting it twice.

I still put notes in my wallet with the queen on top without thinking about it.

Face up notes are my personal preference too and when there's time I'll arrange them that way. But if you think a cashier has the luxury of being able to spend time doing that when there's a queue of moaning customers stretching to the door... ho ho ho, I'm not sure who they'd get it in the neck from first, their manager or the next customer. Sadly notes rarely arrive that way when they're delivered (unless they're brand new) and customers also rarely are kind enough to hand cash over the counter sorted by denomination and facing the correct way, so the poor cashier has the odds against them.

Proof that you can't please all the people all of the time.

^^This. I also worked in a bar in the early 70s and there was a standing instruction to sort the notes with the Queen's head upwards, because "the bank likes them that way."

It was perhaps necessary when notes were counted manually, but not needed now they're counted by machine.

Back in the 70s, it was bank procedure for all notes to be kept that way precisely so they weren't counted twice.

It probably also depends on the cashier - for some, especially the old-school ones I know trained in the late 60s - mid 70s, they insist on having their notes facing the same way, both in their tills and their wallets. I must admit I've picked up that habit too!

Never underestimate the power of a beautiful spreadsheet
  • It does look nicer but the amount of time they'd spend just isn't worth it. Especially when a lot of banks have automated cash dispensers for the cashier to use that counts it for them.
