I don't drink from jam jars, does anyone actually do this or are you talking about the latest trend of fancy Kilner glass jam looking jars with handles, lids and straw that's in all the shops now?

I think some people used to drink from jamjars in poor communities in the past?

I have one of those Kilner jars with lid and straw. There is a reason behind that trend - ie it's recently been found by some people that have been consuming some drinks that their tooth enamel was suffering (think its fizzy drinks? might be people drinking diluted apple cider vinegar?). It's easier to use a glass with a handle too.

I bought my trendy jar for both those reasons - ie I drink the drinks concerned and want them to head directly past my tooth enamel and that handle is that bit easier.

The lid - well it keeps the straw in place and prevents any insects getting into your drink if you're having it outside in the garden or something.

No, that's eating out of the tin.

We've been invited to our Godson's 21st at a restaurant. His parents say they will pay for 2 courses for each guest, any additional courses plus our drinks we need to pay for ourselves. That's easy enough to sort money-wise. Some guests are having main plus dessert and others starter plus main. The ones not having starters will have to wait through that course until the others have finished. I'm not having a dessert because I am diabetic but I do find a dessert course easier not to join in with because I can have another drink or a coffee whilst the others eat.

Yes growing up in the 1950s I knew families who drank out of jam jars, they were large families without enough cups/glasses. It wasn't that unusual.

Well I would have thought we would have progressed beyond that by the middle of the 20th century. Not sure why the last 60 years would have done what the previous few hundred or even thousand hadn't. The 1950s isn't exactly ancient history, well it isn't to me.

general standard of living has supposedly improved, wages improved so people should have more money for the necessities. Prices reduced with the advent of mass production (Industrial revolution anyone?) the ability to import from anywhere in the world in days.. so yes it should be massively different..

The country was very very poor in the 50's trying to rebuild and recover after WWII still.
