How does using a pan make it taste better? (I genuinely don't know because I've never tried).

I make porridge when I get into work - half a cup of oats, a cup of milk, 2 mins in the microwave, then add a spoon of honey. I certainly haven't got the time or resources at work to be doing anything more complicated when all I want is a filling breakfast that I can make in less than 5 minutes.

PS - I buy my oats from Aldi. I think it's 89p for a kilo.

I either add water at work in a ready made one (no microwave at work) or cook it in a pan at home (I think it tastes better in a pan - maybe it's a comfort thing as that's how my mum made it).

Are you meant to do this? I don't.

Also, why don't you soak it in the saucepan and save yourself the hassle of transferring? and eat from the saucepan too, I do that but then I do live alone. :)

Personally - I prefer to eat my food from bowls/plates/etc as appropriate and I've got my favourite little porridge bowl.

Put the pan in the fridge overnight while soaking, same as you would a jug!

And eating out of pans is just vile! .. you fill a sink to wash one pan, you can wash one pan and a bowl in the same soapy water.. there is no excuse!
Hassle? You mean lifting the bowl/jug up and pouring it out of the pan? Yeah right, that's a lot of hassle! ;)

I'd never eat out of a saucepan unless for some inexplicable reason all my crockery had disappeared overnight and I had nothing else to eat out of!

Have to agree with Georgie, Pigpen, and money.

There's something just a little bit gross about eating straight from the saucepan. puke.gif

Is it really that hard to get a bowl? It's not that hard to wash a bowl up! I imagine people who eat straight from the saucepan, to drink from a jam jar too! :rotfl:

Doesn't eating from a pan make it taste metally and also the scraping of the spoon ......

    Because my granny did!

Actually salt & sweet is nice :-)

I like the combination of salt and sweet too! Just wondered if it was added for some other reason than for taste. :)

Just had an email from IKEA, fish, chips and mushy peas on a Friday until the end of the month for only £1 :D

I believe that it helps enhance the oaty taste of the oats, but I don't know the science behind that. I only know that I can taste the difference if I leave it out! I only put a little in - not enough to taste salty.

I make porridge in a pan rather than the microwave as I prefer the texture - cooking it a bit ore slowly, and stirring as it cooks.

I tend to leave the oats soaking in a mix of milk and water overnight, then top up with milk in the morning and cook it, and eat with a splash of cold milk and a little brown sugar.

I've tried it with added fruit but I prefer it without - I'd rather have the fruit separately. Although I do occasionally have maple syrup instead of sugar on it.

My dad still makes better porridge than I do, though!

Hehehe, eating out of the saucepan also keeps it warmer for longer. I would eat from the wooden spoon that I stir with too only its wider than my mouth so I have to get a proper spoon, damn!

I thought a pinch of salt brings out the sweetness, which is why it's often recommended with cake baking.

I don't drink from jam jars, does anyone actually do this or are you talking about the latest trend of fancy Kilner glass jam looking jars with handles, lids and straw that's in all the shops now?

Not that I've noticed but I have a heavy one which I think is ceramic, it looks like Le creuset but cheaper. I don't think the thats metal. I also have a tefal non stick one and I can't eat out of that with a metal spoon as it'll scratch.
