finding if someone knows another friend on Facebook without asking directly?

If I search for people on facebook and go on their facebook page, are they aware of it? Does my name come up in the section-

do you know this person?

Also, when I go onto a friends site I cant always find their friends, I am friends with this person, why cant I access their friends?

How do I check how secure my site is without borrowing a friend's computer (who isn't a friend) and going onto my site?

I am worried that one person who isn't a friend will find out I know one of my friends!

No, they won't be aware of it. Not everyone will pay attention to the "do you know this person" and it varies who it shows and appears to be random. It's possible that the person has viewed the page and Facebook knows it hence why they're showing it (I've never considered that may be the case) or it could just be that it is completely random.
Also, when I go onto a friends site I cant always find their friends, I am friends with this person, why cant I access their friends?

You can change your settings so that your friends list is hidden from others (or certain groups of people). So it's just that it's set to private.

Use your mobile to go on Facebook and check your settings? Ask a friend what they can see on your profile?

You can see if you have mutual friends with others. When you search for someone a friend it'll tell you if you have any mutual friends and how many, plus you can view them people if you can see your friends friend list.

You can block the public and specific people or groups from seeing your friends list, your profile info and posts. You can stop friends of friends seeing posts and that. However, no matter how secure your profile is I'm not sure that you can stop the mutual friends showing on other peoples profiles. Why are you so worried about it?

Yeah, but that doesn't mean they're trolling if that's what you're implying. Just a common teenage problem that they don't want certain people to find them on social media.

Simple enough question to answer anyway so doesn't really matter if it's genuine. Might help others, regardless of how you feel about such a question, and security on social media is a big thing.

My first thought was that they might be two timing someone and didn't want them to find out about each other. Must have a bad mind lol.

It's not just kids who want privacy on FB. Although OP does sound like a *younger* person, some of us adults need it too!

I didn't want my nasty ex-husband tracking me down on FB. I am now married someone else and have a different name but my sister is unmarried and theoretically, he could have a nosey at my profile through her. My privacy settings are very tight and my sister has very kindly agreed to set hers so that only her friends can see her other friends. I don't post profile pictures of myself or my family and I only accept friend requests from people that I actually know. Unlike my sister who has 400+ friends but who is always moaning that she never has anyone to go out pubbing and clubbing with! :rotfl:

It's surprising how lax people are with privacy on social media though. I may attempt to thwart any snooping on me but my ex's new wife lets all and sundry read about her marriage woes (including me, I'm ashamed to say :o) This has also led to a fake profile being set up in her name which is used by people who write in Arabic and who post some very dubious pics and comments. (Yes, I have reported it to FB but it's still there)

    Why? What will they do???

Sort your settings out.. noone can see anything of mine unless I choose to allow it.. including those on my friends list.. though I think my friends list is accessible for anyone not blocked to see.. If I had a problem with someone who 'MIGHT' be an issue I would have them blocked already.. such as every single member of my exes family and friends.. and half the people I was at school with..

As for 'do you know this person?' ... really??? Who cares?? I'm sure you aren't that gangsta half the world if on your trail!

    Just max your privacy settings.

I reckon it is the bosses mistress and she doesnt want his wife finding out about their torrid little affair..

anyone under 30 knows this stuff without a second thought, they just sort it they wouldnt be on a totally public forum.

A very old ex girlfriend who I have no friends in common with and lives a few hours away often comes up as someone I might know on Facebook.

I think there is one answer!
