Ticks

We regularly visit Scotland in our campervan and our doggie always travels with us. We have just returned from near Mallaig and Skye.

I treat with Frontline regularly and if we visit Europe I put on a Scalibor collar. We have been lucky with ticks so far until we returned last night and I found one on her leg. We managed to remove it whole but it could have been on her for up to 4 days ( first day she decided to roll in cow/sheep muck so no cuddles :) )

What symptoms do I need to check for as I believe there can be an incubation period after the bite?

I am so worried as she is 10 now but otherwise healthy.

Thanks

xx

Incidently, a Scalibor collar kill ticks on contact so they do not attach.

Frontline kills when the tick ingests the toxin after attaching
  • Thanks, I had looked at that site as I was worried about Lyme Disease.

As I mentioned I only use a Scalibor collar in Europe and she was frontlined about 3 weeks ago.

I was hoping for advice of what to look for in the coming days. She is her normal active, greedy self :)

Why don't you use the Scalibor collar in this country?

I live in the far north in a rural area where ticks abound. I out the collars on my dogs on April and that covers them for six months until September.

I have not found any ticks on the dogs when wearing them, whereas when I used Fronltine I did find ones that had attached but had not yet been killed. Since the tick has to attach to be affected by Frontline there is always the chance of them passing on a disease.

I would rather the ticks were killed before they attach.

Symptoms of Lyme disease can be non specific and can also be similar to other diseases. The incubation period is not defined.

There's a brief description of some symptoms on our local paper's website. We've got quite a problem with it here at the moment, Chris Packham was here too.

That is a different disease to Lyme disease which is Borreliosis,
  • It never crossed my mind to use a Scalibor Collar in this country but will do now. We visit rural Scotland and islands quite a lot now so will put one on her.

As I said, in 10 years she has been tick free so was just concerned when I found it on Monday. It was still alive when we removed it but was quite flat so hopefully not been on her too long as I believe they go bigger.

I will keep an eye on her and anything slightly out of the ordinary I will get her to the vets.

    Thanks for your help

Ticks are starting to live all year round in this country due to the milder winters we've been having. My dog picked one up in January this year as I don't usually bother applying Advantix after Sept/Oct until March/Apr so he wasn't protected.

We have just found out first tick this year, We are in the far north where winters are a but colder.

The last two days have been warm and sunny so must have brought them out.

We generally find them from April to September.

I use a mix of essential oils on my 2 and it has deterred ticks 100% so far - which is good as both dogs have double coats which are a challenge to check over thoroughly. Sold as Dynamite insect repellant

If you are worried I would chat to your vet. Ticks bites are very common. Where do you buy a Scalibor Collar and do you recommend it? I have never heard of this before. Thanks!
