Hit & Run my parked car. One independent witness. Best way to deal.

Reviving this old thread with new developments.

TP was refusing to talk to their insurer for a while. Finally got around to it and denied hitting my car. Said the damage to their own car was prior damage sustained elsewhere.

So far I have not claimed off my insurer or theirs, was waiting to see how this would go.

Meanwhile Police sent me a letter saying that they would make further proportional enquiries before making a prosecution decision.

What happens now? What do I do?

---- Original Post ----
Hello,
My car is parked on the street outside my house. As I was about to drive off, the gent who lives opposite informed me that my car had been hit by another driver executing a three-point turn, when reversing. The gent and his wife had both witnessed the incident and noted the other cars reg. The other car was parked further down the street. I knocked a few doors but everyone claimed they were not the owner of the guilty car. The offside rear bumper of the guilty car is also scratched. I got some pictures of both vehicles and contacted my insurers. They have said I will need to pay £350 excess on my policy and they will try to locate the other driver while they get my car fixed.

I don't want to loose my no-claims. also my insurance say that unless I take up a legal case, I cannot get my £350 excess back even if it is proven to be a no-fault on my part and the other drivers insurer pays. I don't have legal cover on my policy. Otherwise mine is fully comprehensive. Insurers have confirmed that the other car is insured.

I want to save my no claims and £350.
I will need some factual information on how to proceed. I have filed a police complaint, I will complete the form they gave me and have the claim no/docket no in a day or two.

I have pictures of both vehicles showing damage.
I have two witnesses, husband and wife both have agreed to stand witness.

You don't need to contact the other driver, you have their reg and 2 witnesses, that's all you need. Whilst hit and run is illegal (and you should inform the bib), the Police probably won't do anything about this.

Your Insurers are over egging it to try to get you into a credit hire car for which the CH company pay them a juicy commission.

You can contact the other Insurer directly and claim from them, it's generally very easy and no excess to pay.

You can get the other driver's Insurance details and the contact details of the Insurer for a couple of quid using this link https://www.askmid.com

There's nothing stopping you trying to go direct to the other Insurer but going back to your own Insurer's suggested option if the other Insurer does not play ball

I have a courtesy car included as part of my policy.

Only if you claim from your own policy and pay your excess

In the same circumstances I reported it to the police and claimed on the other drivers insurance.

But will do you no harm if you do contact the police.

^^, I'd have a go with this. Get the driver details and claim from the 3rd party insurer. Also, contact your own to get your claim halted and your excess reimbursed.

    There's three choices.

    1. Get the other car's insurer from AskMID, and claim direct off them.
    2. Claim off your own insurer.
    3. Pay to fix it yourself.

1 runs a very strong risk of the policyholder denying all knowledge, and the insurer refusing to pay out.
2 runs a very strong risk of the other policyholder denying all knowledge, their insurer refusing to pay out, leading to your insurer taking the hit, costing you your excess and NCB.

And you will also have a Crime Number.

So as Neil points out you have nothing to lose only something to gain.

And I was always under the impression it was illegal to drive away from the scene of an accident.

Problem 1 - prove who it was.
Problem 2 - prove they were aware of the collision.
