I've wondered why people do as you describe OP and I don't have an answer. You would think common sense would come into the equation but it doesn't.

Nor have I worked out why when I park in an area with loads of spaces why does someone park next to me when there's enough spaces available.

why don't you park you car and then hide somewhere until someone parks next to you?
You could then ask them the question and come back here with the answer. :)

I park boot facing outwards if visiting a supermarket. I had scrapes and dents down the side of my car before and I knew it was a trolley as the dents were of the same height as the bed of the small trolleys.

One annoyance is people cannot park straightly into a bay and not bothering to spend ten seconds straightening themselves, leaving at least one wheel in the next bay or making opening of doors impossible. I admit I don't always go into a parking straight first time, but I do adjust my parking position. If people can't do this, they should give up driving.

I did ask this question to the lady that parked next to me. She said, she didn't want to leave her car lonely. Cars don't have personalities!!

I'd love to hear from some one who does choose to park next to the lonely car in the carpark !!

Absolutely astonishes me, when i park alone out of the way with spaces either side, almost 100% when we return someone is right next to us, WHY ????

Why would you purposely choose to park at the side of another car ?
    To line up ?
    Just to annoy ?

Come on someone who does it must be one here ! own up why ?
Probably the same people who - when a beach is almost deserted - plonk themselves down within a couple of feet of you.
  • Same thing happens to me at work. I park in the furthest corner of the carpark to save dings and scrapes, and with working shifts, the car park is usually only 1/3rd full anyway. Someone always parks about 2 inches from me, despite acres of empty spaces. Have now taken to straddling 2 bays, that fools them !

Maybe it's people who like to mess with you, find one car in the car park, and park close to your door just to watch the world burn!

Maybe they like similar things in a parking space to what you like, distant from the supermarket, edge of the car park for shade/reduced traffic

Maybe they're considering that it might get busy later, so rather than leaving a gap between your two cars which someone would have to squeeze into risking damage to both of your vehicles, parking next to you makes it easier for the next person and both you and your parking buddy have less damage risk and they're actually doing you a favour

    Maybe they are German*

Maybe they like the colour of your car and are attracted like moths to a flame

    Maybe you smell nice

Maybe they're worried you were the child in the playground who stood by the wall, friendless, and are trying to reassure you that you're not worthless

Maybe they work somewhere without marked parking bays and it's workplace courtesy to park progressively, and the habit lingers.

I don't know, but a few possible reasons for you ;+)

*Sadly, in this day and age, I have to disclose that this is a bit of fun teasing based on national stereotyping and not a declaration of war or a disclosure of my inner soul's inherent racist superiority. I'm firmly in the IN camp in fact.

Strictly speaking, it's consistent with the Highway Code, even though it doesn't apply directly. If you compare it with reversing around a corner, you MUST reverse from the major road onto the minor, not the other way round (unlike the !!!!wit I watched cause an accident the other day in Bath)

But it's a car park, no such rules exist for exiting a parking space within a carpark.

Oh !!!!!!. Go to a supermarket, get your shopping?. It's not one of the mysteries of life

Ok smartie pants, why do people park in the most awkward way possible with their boot the opposite way around from the way they need it? It's certainly a mystery to me why people consistently inconvenience themselves week in week out.

I've told OH that if there's any kind of apocalyptic scenario where we're worried that we're the only people left, all we need to do is go and park in the local town centre car-park to find someone else. I can guarantee that even if every other space is empty and the town appears deserted, someone will come and park right next to us.
But maybe with that theme you are onto something ... Imagine that apocalypse happens when you are shopping and, by some fluke, you and the owner of the neighbouring car are the only survivors. By parking next to each other you are more likely to find out that there is another survivor, can pair up, pool your resources, and make a go of living; if you are at opposite ends of the car park, you could both feel like you are alone in the world ... :D
