Ahhhh the issue is the name on my photographic ID (passport) does not match the name on my debit card so that wouldn't have worked either. (Changed my name but haven't changed my passport) This is why I needed a Chip and Sign....

They only usually ask when like me - cards are not signed, a record of my sig is held in branch, with chip and pin I see no need to broadcast my sig on a card anymore, I up my own security, if someone finds my card and uses it with swipe with no ID then thats not my fault.

Saying that I took dad shopping and got caught out, had no ID but given I had a handful of cards in my surname as did dad in the same surname the supervisor was happy enough to confirm the sale.

New contactless debit arrived the other day, so hopefully contactless and C&P will stop failing :)

Really think biometrics or fingerprint tech would be on terminals by now, it was planned to be within 10 years of C&P launch.

I wouldn't be bothered about not having one as I don't like them. My latest card I had before Xmas was a new contactless one and most of the time I either forget and put my card in the machine anyway or when I do remember, it doesn't work and I have to wave it at the machine a number of times before it works.

Some cards are a royal pain, it would be interesting to know what banks are using what chip provider.

In theory an unsigned card is not valid as it is a requirement of all accounts that cards are signed upon receipt.

But the contradiction is a C&P card is valid when PIN is entered, a unsigned card does not invalidate C&P validation of transaction or payment due for such.

Random checks were set up for the C&P to ensure the card holder was actually present, a pin and signature were meant for random validation, UK binned that??

Why the UK binned so many of the security and features of C&P terminals I fail to understand, but they did??

Even now C&P models that have NFC/contactless modules are not activated...

Poor UK standards of implementation of the whole C&P terminals, such a waste of money.

No need to sign a bank card now as you use CNP, the only exception is signature only card.

Many banks capture your signature on completion of a bank account as part of the application process, so this is checked on screen and not from a card as you no longer pass a card to a cashier to make a purchase or withdrawal so they wouldn't have the chance to check the signature.

Probably OK if you never leave England but i've been asked to sign (on occasion) both inside and outside the UK.

At the end of the day, if the retailer doesn't want to accept your card, they are not going to take it unless you've already consumed the product.

What about those in Scotland, Wales and N.I ? Do they get a exemption from the UK banks ?

Technically it does, because as the card states on the back, it is "Not Valid Unless Signed Below".

Whether any cashier checks that is another matter ;)

That's true I suppose although I haven't had to sign for any purchase where a CNP has been used.

My post was in reply to the post about having to sign your card, my reply was in relation to UK purchase but accept this maybe different outside the UK but there is now no obligation to sign your card. if you do get asked for verification you would produce some form of ID passport if outside the UK maybe.

From a banks view signature is not needed but I accept from a purchaser may deny payment without proof of signature but this doesn't have to be on your bank card.

If you use CNP terminals the cashier wouldn't have a need to have your card in their hands to check, that said they are checking a signature but not necessarily from your card signature capture I'd used.

I do have cards that say not valid without signature but I don't see how this is important on a nectar or tescos clubcard, amongst others.

Not sure no signature on card invalidates purchase in the presence of CNP as most of the time transaction is cancelled without CNP no override to signature for risk or reprocessions for the retailer.
