My contact in Penrith has forwarded to me very recent correspondence regarding this anchor tenant of a fairly new retail park in Cumbria.

Further to this my correspondent contacted the CEO at B&Q.

Understandably B&Q were horrified and within 24 hours of contacting B&Q the estate agent contacted my correspondent informing her that UKPC had been given a severe telling off and not to do anything so stupid again.

They will of course, being UKPC they can't help it. Too much money to be made!

My contact sent B&Q the following,

Dear Mr Loeve,

Please find attached a copy of a letter published in our local newspaper, the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald.

You will see this refers to the issuing of a parking charge to one of your customers. I find it totally unreasonable that a car with a small trailer is excluded from using your car park particularly when the specific purpose of the trailer is for the carrying of goods purchased in your store.

Many local businesses, including my own, use trailers on a regular basis (and many local builders also) and until such time as your landlord’s parking contractor refrains from the issuing of parking charges I will advise that my company drivers not to use your store and other retailers at Castle Retail Park, Penrith.

Can you please take up this matter with your property managers/agents and have this charge cancelled and allow for the use of vehicles with trailers on your Penrith store car park.

B&Q replied as follows,

I have conducted my investigations into the complaint you have raised regarding one of our customers receiving a parking ticket for parking with a trailer.
This had been passed along to our property management team who have gotten in touch with the managing agent for the parking area.
As I am aware, the managing agent has been in contact with you to advise we have removed this parking notice from the customer and have fed back this issue to the parking attendants in the area.
We would believe that the attendant has been overzealous in their actions and the customer has been contacted with a resolve to this issue.
I would like to offer you our thanks for taking the time and trouble to advise us of this issue, it is feedback such as this that enables B&Q to improve its customers journey.
If there is anything our office can assist you with in the future, please don’t hesitate in contacting us.

Good result but ticketing a trailer in a DIY store is beyond belief.

Who wants to bet that the resolve from the delightful UKPC was "you can pay us at the discounted rate for a little longer" ;)

You do realise it was a PA that had taken notes then typed the actual letter so criticising the letter and the appropriate spelling and use of English language may not have been down to the author.

Surely like anything in life if created or carried by humans then a mistake will happen and being the grammar police really belittles you rather than the author of the letter, Harsh yes but nit picking over such trivial things is just stupid in my view as it would be in others to.

B&Q saw the light some time ago and kicked ParkingEye out of their own car parks after realising the harm that was being done to their business. However, a lot of B&Q's are on multi-occupancy retail parks (like this one apparently) where they don't control the parking.

Good to see that they are still prepared to lean on the managing agents though.

Pah. I agree with Dolly. "Gotten" is ugly, it's lazy and it sets my teeth on edge. I realise there's a fashionable, politically-correct tendency to claim that it doesn't matter how crap one's English is as long as it can be understood, but to me that's merely an excuse for ignorance and bad education.

    Firstly, I commend B & Q for their actions.

Secondly, I did not infer who made the grammatical error - you do not know if a PA was even involved. I have worked as a secretary/PA in the past and it is part of the job to ensure spelling/grammar is correct.

Thirdly, I meant it in a light-hearted way and you seem to have taken it far too seriously.

    Sorry you have been offended.

Not offended in the slightest merely pointing out the reason for a grammar error and can assure you that no managing director of any large Company actually writes there own letter.
