MSE News: Sky TV prices to jump in June – how to beat the hikes

  • I recently ordered Sky Q, before the price rise was announced (£5/mth in my case). Got the email today about the price rise and called Sky about it - they were not in the slightest bit interested in entertaining any idea of a discount and just advised that I'm free to cancel Sky Q any time before installation. I have negotiated discounts several times in the past but not now - either I've lost my negotiating ability or Sky are less flexible. Perhaps this is something specific to Sky Q - anyone else facing the same issue?

How do you find the quality of Now TV?

Haven't actually got it myself -but I'm led to believe that the quality is OK for the main Sky channels on the Entertainment pack. I've kept Sky for the Sports in HD -I've tried streaming sports thru various addons for Kodi on an Android box, but 1. channels "disappear" and 2. I got a lot of buffering even on poor quality streams.:(

It's such a new product -and presumably in high demand - so why would Sky show any interest in a deal ? Furthermore, down the road in a year or 18 months time, I don't believe they will be offering retention deals because they can just demand their rented kit back!!

Virgin Media have always rented the kit to you and have always done retention deals, so no need to panic just yet :).

If you haven't had it installed yet it makes it more difficult to negotiate. I understand from other posts that they are not offering deals on Sky Q so early adopters will be stung for higher prices.

...I'm not panicking cos I can't justify the extra costs of SkyQ anyway -might make negotiating on "old" SkyHD easier tho':)
The point about the renting vs owning argument is that you can still use the old gear for Freesat from Sky (or connect up a Freesat box) -you are going to be s**ewed if you have gone SkyQ and they collect the box!!
  • i read your price hike page for june last year and it said sky was only allowed to increase the price once in the first year but didn't see it on the page for this years hikes

i joined sky in sep 2015 just the original package with phone and fibre, they already increased my price by £1 in November and just received an email to say they are going to put it up further by another £1.50, are they allowed to put it up again? and also being a new customer in the price table on the page it says i shouldn't be having a price increase as i only have a original tv bundle

    thanks for any advise

My discount ends in a few months and then it's good bye Sky. Not going to accept any discount other than about 90% off for a year. We have been happily enjoying Sky movies on Now TV via Xbox since Xmas at £5 a month. I can easily get the entertainment vouchers for same price. Throw in Netflix and Sky is completely not needed. We have more than enough with those three for around £17 a month.

They are still charging premium prices for a product that has ceased to be premium.

    Goodbye Sky.
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

Just had the Sky price rise email - be aware that it isn't truly personalised even tho' it is addressed to the subscriber by name. It gives the generic price rise (in my case £4.75) NOT the actual (ie in my case, discounted to £2.35) rise.
You need to go into your MySky page to see what you are going to be charged going forwards.
Quite shocking that it is between 7 and 8% tho'
  • I recently signed up with Sky and had it installed 2 weeks ago. I'm on a 50% discount on the Family Bundle, would that mean that my increase would only be £1 (50% of the TV increase)?
