Go for the dealer with the best AFTERSALES as that is what matters - ANY fool can sell you a car,and bank your hard earned.
Very good friend of mine was an exceptional dealer. His customers were the movers and shakers of the world - even sold Diana her first Audi! Why important? He sold his vehicles for around £1k OVER market price. But they were spotless!! Normally a car prep takes a few hours - his took two weeks, every nut and bolt, every fault seen to. His customers were loyal, and he had outstanding aftersales service where people stayed with him for life.
He was NEVER cheap, if you wanted a cheap used car, you went ot a cheap dealer. If you wanted a quality one, you came to him.
So negotiate - Of course!
Best to Negotiate at quieter periods - sorry too late now! Christmas, particularly week before is good. I dropped 8k off a motorhome like this - just be polite and persistent, and keep reminding them that if the price is right you will definitely buy today.If a manager is there, talk to him - if not, politely insist the sales rep calls him. In my case, he was off christmas shopping!
Polite persistence will earn you a discount as great as itself.0 -

We don't negotiate with travel agents or costa coffee

Although you don't usually get a discount, the last few times I've bought from PC World I've haggled a few extras thrown in for free.0 -
haggle on any big purchases including white goods and other electricals. Why not? I have done so with some success especially if putting a package of goods together.0

I negotiate in Waitrose at the counters, they will knock a bit off and if reduced you can get more off, last deal was 2.5kg angus roasting joints down to £4.75kg from £15 knocked them down to £3.50.
Cars auto trader sort on price for nearly new the dealers should be able to match the lowest or get close.
We were looking at one new model same car spec 3-6 months old demonstrators low £9k at two dealers high £13k. New on carwow around £12k0 -

I would not be able to sleep if I ended up paying the asking price unless it was obviously a huge bargain. Dealers do not usually pay you your asking price if you have a trade in. They negotiate when they are buying so you should also.0 -
Is this a main dealer or an independent one? If it's a main dealer you might find you can get a new car for the same price as a year old car once all the incentives are added.
Also compare the price of a new car from the brokers against the price year old car.0 -
I would probably buy new from a broker instead of buying a year or two old.
If you intend to keep long term then depreciation is pretty much irrelevant.0 -
Have you excluded a new car?
I have often noticed that nearly new prices in main dealers are not much lower than new cars (with negotiated discount).
Forget list prices. Look at broker prices for new cars (such as drive the deal). This will give you the real price of the new car. Then decide if the nearly new price is correct.
Sometimes a dealer will give a bigger discount if you take a finance package. Sometimes this extra discount is greater than the interest charges for the loan so its basically a further discount0
