With nearly new cars theres a world of choice.

Dont be afraid to travel for the right car at the right price - it'll still be covered by manufacturers warranty anyway, so your local franchised garage can repair it.

Its better to get £100 off a £10K car, than £1,000 off the same car in another dealers at £11,000, so dont be fixated on discount.

Most year old cars on forecourts will be ex hire, ex lease or "ex management" cars, so ask about who owned if previously if this is likely to bother you.

    Have you a trade in?

No trade in, my current car is 22 years old, Nissan Micra! Time for a new car. I can pay cash or take finance.

Why's it a given that people negotiate with car dealers?
We don't negotiate with travel agents or costa coffee :s

Find one that's priced competitively based on its spec and s/h

Maybe YOU don't, but don't tar us all with the same brush. ;)

Always negotiate, I bought a couple of decorative plates from a fancy Nik nak shop, got a tenner off £50.

Houses, you never offer the asking price.

So why are cars any different.

Don't appear too interested, if they think you're in love with it then they won't be as willing to play with the price. Be prepared to walk away if you have to. There are plen of other cars out there.
  • Check out the cars you're interested in on Autotrader, get the cars value on Parkers, I printed out copies and took them along for reference, that way I had something to go on while trying to weigh up it value.
I went to Motorpoint, their prices are really competitive, the salesmen were very helpful, and didn't overdo the extra covers, Gap insurance etc...
Didn't get any discount, but I did drive away with virtually a full tank of petrol!

There seem to be two camps.

    1. Go to a local dealer. Feel happy when you've negotiated x% off the price. Result: Dealer prices high, so that he still makes the margin he wants. Hard to get all the discount out of him. Takes hours. Lots of games going on.

    2. Use the power of the internet, even if that means travelling. Look at cars which are amongst the cheapest in the country. Result: The dealer who prices to sell can sell loads. This works especially well if its ones he can get his hands on quickly - pre-regs or new.

I spent almost a day trying to get my local toyota dealer down to a reasonable price for a prereg Yaris. In the end I left and rang a dealer 100 miles away. Did the deal in less than 15 minutes, including a deal on the trade-in (which I described with all faults). Drove there the following weekend to swap them over.

The dealer I bought from said that he'd sold ten that weekend I bought mine.

Thanks everyone, I've done all the research, checked prices, one point no one has mentioned is wait till end of the month/quarter/year when just one more sale may make up the sales quota. Not a gaursnteed strategy.

Also buy just after the reg year changes.
