She's clearly talking about population.
And if I were to talk about the population size of city A versus the population size of city B, am I comparing them?
In the same way you might talk about the taste of chocolate A versus the taste of chocolate B.
She may as well have said "I hate all <insert skin colour here> people! But I'm not racist." The two statements make as much sense as one another.
Edit: I just wanted to be absolutely clear.
compare
verb
present participle: comparing
1. estimate, measure, or note the similarity or dissimilarity between.
And here's what she's quoted as saying...
"There are two one million-people cities in the world that have gone backwards: Glasgow and Detroit. Now I'm not for a second comparing us to Detroit which is an American tragedy," Aitken says.
Yes... yes you are Susan, that is exactly what you're doing and telling everyone it's not does not make it so.0 -
Well anyway, I was grateful to Beecher2 for getting to the source of the article quoting O'Leary. An genuine approach to clarification I thought.
I suppose we might need a new category like woolly reporting or Fake reporting or bad reporting to describe a "News" item which gives a misleading impression. It depends a lot on the motive I guess.
Then there is spin, the language of fake politics.
Anyway, semantics aside, Fake News is a good enough term for me to describe that article.Union, not Disunion

Disaster for Sturgeon as Spain BACKS May over plans to block Scottish independence vote
Well who would have thought that?:):)
Fake news or fact - let's wait and see if others support the report.
Oops - here we go - I shan't try to keep up with reports as they come in.Union, not Disunion

Also it seems that Sturgeon has (again) been frustrated by May in their meeting today, with perhaps one small exception being the following. But Ms Sturgeon attached importance to one element. She said that the prime minister had indicated her intent to secure a Brexit deal - including the future of trading links with the remaining EU - within the two year timescale set out in Article 50.0 -

If this is true, what a climb down!
It's gone from:
- Full EU membership
to
- EEA/EFTA membership
to
- actually the deal as part of Brexit might work
However I will say, to her credit this is what compromise actually looks like if she is indeed entertaining Brexit + the negotiated deal. Compromise did not look like messing with Brexit negotiations by calling a referendum or insisting that single market membership is a red line when clearly that doesn't have to be the case, no one voted for that.0 -

But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

May doesn't have to frustrate anyone. She just has to get on with her job while letting Nicola get on with not doing hers.0
