Living out of my store cupboard & freezer, how little can I spend to feed my family?

Hi, so sorry I've been MIA. I organised a big surprise party for my father and it was yesterday so been a bit run off my feet. Can relax now. Have been really good eating out of my store cupboard! Even though I have made the decision to go Vegan, so today is day 3. I'm going to pop to aldee today, as we've run out of fruit for the littlies. So my three weeks worth actually only lasted two!!!! I hope to not spend anymore than about 15 for the week, but we'll see, I'll update you later.
Yummy things I've been making are banana porridge, veggie fingers in pittas, and I made my version of Moroccan quinoa, so yummy!!!!
Right going to drink my tea and go shopping!0 -
missymoo, awesome decision! I have decided to make the transition back to veganism too
2 nights i cooked up a nut roast that's been in the back of my cupboard forEVER..it was delicious! I ate a third for my roast dinner, then used another third yesterday in a baguette for lunch. I'll use the other third up today in a wrap for lunch, with salad etc.
I have a box of Old El Paso fajitas to use up, so that's on the menu tonight. I'll make the boys with chicken and then just have extra veg in mine
I need to get some more veggies, but that's about it!0 -
Only have seven dinners to sort out over the next two weeks then I am away on holiday for a week so I have been freezer diving
Last night I dug out two odd looking things that turned out to be two lamb-burgers which I cooked with two left over wrinkly mushrooms and had on a chilli/herby wrap from the freezer
I piled up lots of salad and grated cheese on top and some chutney left over from Christmas. It really was nice and very filling I have also found a tiny bit of steak and a couple of chilli sausages in there which are defrosting for tonight dinner with some green beans and mashed potato also from the freezer. In the cupboard I seem to have several packet mixes of angel delight so tonights pudding will be butterscotch angel delight:):) I am doing my best to use up as much as I can before I go away of the fresh stuff.Celery soup will be made this morning for several lunches next week.In the fridge I still have a head of brocolli and half a white cabbage to use up,plus lots of salad bits. The main part of my following meals this week and next will hopefully come from the freezer.trouble is a lot of the stuff is quite iced up so its freezer roulette what I defrost at times
:):) But I do like a bit of excitement in my life
:):) so who knows what i will dig out next
:):)

Well I`ve taken 2 portions of bolognese from the freezer for tonight, tomorrow it`s cauli cheese with sausages, all ingredients in the freezer or cupboard. Went shopping yesterday, and spent a bit less than last week. Still room for improvement, so baby steps at the moment, but I`ll keep trying!0

I'm attempting my first pho tonight. It's actually a nice way to use up various veggies and I have a few that need to go in something. I have some frozen leftover grilled steak that I'll get out and slice thinly. (If the meat is still slightly frozen it's easier to slice)
My husband is going to shop for a week long camping (fishing) trip he goes on every spring. He ask what I needed for the house and I only need milk and onions! Missymoo, this is saving us money and is fun to share with others as I 'shop' my stores of food.
JackieO I snorted my tea when I read your odd looking things turned out to be lamb burgers.
Good job !!Gizwal!!Overprepare, then go with the flow.

I found what i THINK is smoked haddock, cod and something else fishy,in my freezer today.
So it's fish pie tonight, which uses up the last 3 potatoes nicely!0 -

Some things jump out as being able to do, like make bread for sandwiches, but others do not, like what am I going to do with all that Quinoa? Maybe use it instead of rice?
Hi Missy! I have started reading this thread from the beginning so forgive me if somebody has mentioned this further down, but I give my chickens quinoa and couscous cos none of the family would eat it!!!:j[DFW Nerd club #1142 Proud to be dealing with my debt:TDMP start date April 2012. Hi everyone! Wow you're all doing so well! I spent £30 in Aldee and £10 in Tosco, that's for 2 weeks worth of food. Aldee was so cheap on the bread and tins stuff, but their fruit was twice as expensive as the tosco offers at the moment. it appears on average it's about £20 a week instead of the £15 I thought. But that's not too bad. I'm going to dig some chilli out of the freezer for the littlies dinner tonight, and I'm not sure what I'll have. Porridge for breakfast. Pitta for lunch with salad. I feel like I'm eating a lot more healthily! Which is great!
Thanks lillebet might try that.0 -
I found some tins of chick peas in the cupboard and I'm going to make a chickpea curry. Last night the butterscotch Angel Delight was gorgeous even though it was dated 2015 tasted OK to me and I'm still alive .I have some more packets of instant puds in the cupboard which I will use up this week.
Tomorrow will be a Birds semolina pudding. I think I had a 'mad' moment last year when these things were on offer and I bought them as a standby in case we had a snowy winter and I couldn't get to the shops .
This past winter has been relatively mild so they had been stuck at the back of the cupboard, but I will use them up before I do anything else.I used up the last banana in the bowl on Friday with the tail-end of the custard powder tin and half a pint of milk.Custard powder is on my shopping list ,but it won't be bought until the packet mix stuff is used up:) Onwards and upwards chums

Well we really enjoyed the meals from the huge batch cook I did. I only spent one day cooking and the freezer has loads of ready meals for me to take out when we want them. Today I've taken out 2 M&S ready meals I got from the company shop back in Sept at a reduced price of £1.10 each instead of God know how much but they got stickers on 3 for £10 it's chicken in red wine mash and veg. I bought them because I thought oh they'll do to take on holiday in Oct and there still sitting in the freezer taking up space, somoutnthey come and will be either today's meal or tomorrow's. I always like to give OH a choice lol but what he doesn't pick today is tomorrow's anyway. I've also taken out 2 portions of cod in parsley sauce these will be turned into fish pie and served with veg. I'm now getting space again in the freezers. How I forgot I also took out 4 bridge rolls out so it's going to be hot dogs for lunch. They were YS to 10p the other week. Why pay full price when you may get it YS0
