Living out of my store cupboard & freezer, how little can I spend to feed my family?

2 months! Oh no
Maybe I'll just give up coffee! Got about half way down the cup and couldn't drink anymore. I have also tried ALmond milk (fine in tea), soya milk and goats milk.
I'm really intrigued to know what Onion Porridge is? Is it what it sounds like? I've made some chocolate cereal cakes today out of the odds and ends of cereals left in the boxes. They are most certainly not on SW lol, hopefully the kids will eat them all tomorrow.0 -
I gave up milk in coffee years ago, and from memory, adapted to it very quickly, as in over a week or two. Now, I can take milk in coffee if it's made accidentally but prefer black, but never can I take it with sugar.0

I just did lots of research about health and every bit of research i did pointed to the fact that a whole foods, plant based diet is the best for optimal health.
I looked briefly into The China Study, and other academic research and decided to go vegan overnight. It was quite simple really.
The reason i gave it up was that i was having some health issues still and the GP wouldnt send me for more testing unless i was willing to start eating meat and dairy again.0 -

I make my own nut cheeses now, which was the last thing I was pining for.
Thank you! I'm devouring this thread now.
I could easily do it I know, but not sure about the rest of my family which would in turn make it hard for me.
Wanttobese, I've done so much research into food, and k ow exactly what I should and shouldn't be eating, but am my own worst enemy! I'm at least a stone or probably two overweight and just eat whatever! I need to reign it in. I think I will look at my stores with a more health conscious eye and see what I can come up with. Cakes and biscuits are great and they're filling the kids up, but need to make some more sustaining and healthy things too!
Trouble is nuts and salad and veg and fruit and milk alternatives are all expensive!0 -
Yesterday I used 500g mince beef, 2 YS peppers, YS aubergine they had 10th Feb date on a box of Aldee S6 mushroom from the previous offer, current cheap onions and carrots and savoy cabbage and potatoes. I cooked chilli 6 portions, cottage pie 4 portions, lasagna using YS pasta sheets from Sainsbobs 18p per 500g pack they were selling off their basics brand 6 portions. I doubled up the mash and cabbage whilst inward cooking it and half was mixed together to make bubble and squeek. Everything was either YS or current cheap offers so I've got 4 evenings worth of meals in the fridge and 10 portions of ready meals for the freezer. Total cost of food was £4.02 for 18 portions of food working out at 22p per portion, I'm well pleased with that thanks to the current cheap veg offers. Why pay full price when you may get it YS0

Thanks Missy I surprise myself how cheaply we are living since early retirement last September. I've cut the bills as much as we can but still be comfortable and not cold and hungry. We are living very much the OS way and frugal. xWhy pay full price when you may get it YS0

Well today, has been tons of fruit as per usual, cereal for littlies, porridge and banana for me, sandwiches for them and nothing for me. But we've just had veggie fingers and pittas with a few chips for tea, so not too bad, and no Money spent!0

I'm on a mission to clean out my refrigerator's freezer. It's a big drawer and I found a large ham (gammon) bone lurking at the bottom. It still had some nice bits of ham so I thought beans cooked using it and a chopped onion would be good. Im using my SC. I'm also making cornbread.

I usually throw in a handful of grated cheddar and some chopped chiles when I make cornbread, but as I have no cheddar I'm going to root around in my cheese drawer and find something to use.
My mother was born in Texas and was a teenager during the depression. Pinto beans and cornbread was a staple in her home growing up.
It's comfort food to me.Overprepare, then go with the flow.
