Of course you weren't right to walk out.

Personally I've never heard of anyone eating their food then walking out of a restaurant because it was too busy to pay straight away. If you really had to leave why not just go and stand by the till, then ask passing members of staff to take your payment?

Walking out is crazy in my opinion.
Have you read the first post?

They waited for some time for staff to bring the bill, then waited again for staff to collect payment.
When that didn't happen, they did go and stand at the till.

Did you read the post you're quoting? ;)

OP did say that several members of staff went past them as they were stood at the till. It always comes back to the lack of verbal communication imo.

ETA: At least, thats what I personally can't understand and from some other posts, seems the bit that isn't sitting right with most. If OP had done this, I daresay some if not most of the replies would have been a lot more favourable.

We waited at the table after the bill was presented (after my daughter sought a member of staff). My son waited at the till with the bill and his card in his hand, made eye contact and was smiled at by three staff who were aware he was there. We later all stood by the till with our coats on and waited before we left. The letter to the company stated all of this. They are aware that we did not pay and that we had been ignored by staff. There was also an additional issue of a data protection breach which they have been made aware.
My son is still in contact with them and their area manager.
To add this was not an isolated incident in this restaurant that night.

Imagine this scenario. A member of the public is waiting at the till. They are either waiting for a table or waiting to pay their bill. In either case several members of staff made eye contact in approximately 20 minutes. Nobody said 'I'll be with you in a moment , sir' Unacceptable in either case.

    Unacceptable service that may be.

Usually the appropriate action for that is not to leave a tip or leave a really bad tip - not to walk out without paying.

If it was enough to affect your dining experience then you either complain to a staff member (who will usually go get the manager) or ask for the manager and complain to them directly. Usually they will apologise and remove items from the bill as a goodwill gesture.

But you said yourself, they were busy. Do you always do everything perfectly? Never make a mistake? Never misunderstand someones intentions? Never forget? Never thought "wow, i didn't realise how much time had passed"? Perhaps they'd had people call in sick so were shortstaffed. They're just trying to earn a living like you or me - and they obviously were trying or they'd be standing idly around rather than rushing back and forth.

So why didn't you just SPEAK to someone and tell them that you want to make an immediate payment because your leaving!. You have extremely poor communication skills that you need to improve!.

I have been to a restaurant before which I was waiting for over 45 minutes for my plates to be cleared. So I went and spoke to a waitress and said I wanted the bill and would pay immediately by card. I then explained how poor the service was. But I would have never just got up and walked out without even speaking to anyone!.

Well it's done now, looks like the op got a free meal and a free return. What anyone else may do is neither here nor there as the matter appear to be concluded.

Of course, with such bad service the OP won't dream of using the voucher.

So, has the bill been paid or not?
