MSE News: Hotpoint tumble dryer help: 3 extra tricks to get you a refund

  • I bought my Hotpoint dryer from Currys in May 2014. I registered my appliance with Hotpoint in January 2016, when I received the Safety Alert. After finding that Safety/Consumer groups were advising not to use the machine I wrote to Hotpoint in March 2016 and demanded a refund - no response. I went to Curry's and asked for the manager for a refund or replacement under the Sale of Goods and was fobbed off and redirected back to Hotpoint. I sent my details to Amex under a Section 75 claim and within three weeks they refunded me in full. I then got a call from Currys asking what was going on (!) and I told them to come and collect the old tumble dryer. Thanks MSE for the advice.
  • They offered me a new dryer for £19 if I took the old one back to Currys. So I did.
  • I had a defective tumble dryer which I registered with Whirlpool & was told there would be no scrappage scheme so I took my old tumble dryer to local recycle centre for safe disposal.
Now Whirlpool refuses me this offer of £59 replacement even though they acknowledge I registered a faulty dryer with them & had booked repair for which I then cancelled due to risk of fire. Not very happy with Whirlpool after service!

I got fed up waiting for a repair and they offered me a new one for £99.
I didn't take it, and then they offered me a new one for £49 which I took.
I have only had it a few months only to find it too is on the fire risk register. They are offering me a repair. No point asking for my money back, at £49, that won't buy me a new one, so I think I will email them today and say I want a replacement. I don't really want a repair done

I bought a £49 indesit replacement last June. It didn't have the green sticker dots on the front but I have just dragged it out and it does have a dot on the back. Might be worth checking the back as when I put in the serial and model numbers it did say it needed fixing. Hope this helps. Lot more wary about using it now. Think ill buy a smoke detector for the utility room.

  • We bought our new hotpoint dryer in 2014 and we're informed of the potential fire risk the following year. After waiting for over 6 months for the repair, we grudgingly paid £99 for a new, lower specification dryer as we had a new baby on the way and didn't want to take any chances with our baby's safety. With all the recent news coverage of this, I am now thinking we should have at the very least gotten a refund for the original dryer which cost close to £200. Does anyone know if I have a leg to stand on?
  • just got mine updated 22 Feb 17. I requested repair 28 April 16 !!. What a farce...

I was offered a new vented tumble dryer for £99 from Indesit, as there was no refund available. This was 6 months ago. Hotpoint telephoned me 2 days ago regarding my appliance & did not know it had been replaced. I doubt they will refund any amount now, even though it originally cost £450. Best to be safe than sorry, but a lot of money to pay out when it was still under warranty. !!!!

Registered for a repair on 11 Mar 2016, still no repair date! They sent me an email with replacements for £99, when I try to order one for home delivery, the button on the page is faded out and there is a stop sign, so that doesnt work either. Company I bought it from does not exist anymore. As it bought it 7 years ago, difficult to find a record of the transeaction (no luck so far). When I try their live chat page or help line, "no one is available" or on hold for ages. They tell me to switch it off, but will not replace it (even at a discount) or offer a repair. The UK recall system is a joke, Toyota told me my car needed a recall replacement in July 2016, still wating for a date for that as well.

A faded button probably means that model is out of stock, you can either wait and keep checking the website or choose a different model.
I had a faulty vented Hotpoint and have ordered a heat pump condenser replacement with A+ energy rating.
