Just wanted to update on what has happened for me.
I registered my Tumble Dryer (10 yrs old) on 02/03/2016
Spoke to customer support on twitter on 06/03/2016 and asked them what the wait time for a repair was as I have a 2 year old in the house and wasnt happy with a machine requiring a modification being used in the house.
They promptly booked me an engineer for 18/03/2016, he came did the work and left. At this point I was more than happy with the service however next day BANG BANG BANG. Something is wrong. Tumble dryer finally stops turning and lets out a strong electrical burning smell.
Contacted hotpoint back and advised them of the events since the engineer visit and they have offered me a replacement of on Indesit IDC8T3B.
Hotpoint have been absolutely fantastic and I cant fault them at all :T0 -
I registered my tumble dryer back in November, I have had no contact from Hotpoint (despite numerous chases), other than a letter to say I have an affected product. They say its safe to use as long as I keep an eye on it. I bought a tumble dryer, not a TV.
I have read so much negative press and seen the stories of fires on This Morning, I dont know if anyone else has had a fire from their machine, I certainly dont want such a thing to happen to me!0 -

Write a letter to them and ask for a modification date. Send it recorded delivery - most people report success by doing this. Try and keep it short and to the point, don't make it arsey or fill it with complaints.
As far as I'm aware nobody on here has actually reported first hand they've had a "fire", more so "burning smells".
It's not really worth going into how much risk there is with these machines because it turns the entire thread into a debate - but I'd suggest you go back a few pages and look at the figures etc... and then make up your own mind.
Not sure how old your dryer is, but if you've had it a good few years then the chances are it isn't just going to spontaneously combust (despite what you read on this thread).
I take massive issue with This Mornings potty coverage of this matter, on the one hand yes it's good they're making people aware - but they're obsessed with showing burnt out houses/machines which haven't even been confirmed to be caused by this particular design flaw (as opposed to poor maintenance or other causes) which doesn't sit right with me.
They've also got a consumer "expert" who makes regular appearances and likes to make out she's leading a one woman campaign against Hotpoint to rectify this but as far as I'm concerned she talks out her bottom most of the time and so far despite promises like "I'm not letting this go" I fail to see what she's actually doing about it other than spitting out bits of regurgitated news (like the small claims court case in Ireland). I don't think she's given a single piece of customer advice so far, despite her title.
So yeah, This Morning's coverage should be taken with a pinch of salt.0 -

I have a different view point to AJXX, I agree that the chances of a fire are very small but Hotpoint have decided to embark on a multi million pound repair programme and they wouldn't do that lightly.
Hotpoint tell you to ensure that you clean the filters every cycle and not to leave it unattended. They don't tell you what to do if it actually catches fire. I'd imagine with the fire starting inside the metal machine it would be very hard to put out, it would also smoke heavily which may hinder any fire stopping method.
Electrical Safety First recommend that you do not use the appliance until it has been checked by Hotpoint.Electrical Safety First recommends that anyone who discovers they have an electrical item that has been recalled should stop using it until it has been checked by the manufacturer.
It's also worth noting that your house insurance may refuse to pay out if you are using a recalled appliance.0 -
My tumble was modified last week. It took half an hour (including a coffee and quick chat), normal apparently, but the chap who did it told me that they were allocated an hour to do each one. He finished at 2.30, and had completed his jobs for the day, so was going home; perhaps that's why everyone is waiting so long.0
