I've just returned from a similar type of tour though did it all the MSE way.(self drive, motels booked individually)

Was away for 16 days in total, drove 4,600 miles and it cost £1500 in total for two of us :D

I'm in the process of writing a report of how our itinerary and how I managed to keep the costs down.

Hope you have a grand time!

    We don't even play!!! LOL!!!

Yeah gutted, im glad you are going back, not sure that will happen for us, as wanting to buy a bigger house and missus wants a baby! :)
  • thanks for the replies.

Rich - I've checked out the blue butterfly at yosemite but it's $225 a night - bit steep for me so i'll prob have to check other options today. Any other advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Will also look into furnace creek now :D

Malib- have written also on veags thread, but I'm planning on pre booking a trip to alcatraz - prob a night tour and people seem to think these are the best. Are there any websites i should be looking at?

blindman - looking forward to hearing about your trip and money saving tactics.

mich - hope you have a great time.

    When are you going?

    Yosemite
If you stay inside the park it's expensive. Cheapest option I could find was the Peregrine B+B
(The last report is mine). Still cost $140 + tax per night but was very nice. Only complaint was that it was a little way from the Valley floor. Good location for Glacier Point .

We stayed outside the park at Mammouth Lakes HI.
Used some award points for an effective free night. Got the points from using the Holiday Inn Priority Credit card which gets you 10,000 points from that link
Sign your partner up for a separate card and then you'll have 20K between you.
Takes about 3-4 months to get them so plan ahead!
Gas is expensive in the park (no surprise and in the neighbouring areas $3.30/gallon in\near and about $2.50 'normally' )so top up well before you get near. I filled up at Bishop.

We crossed into the park via the Tioga pass, very scenic

We did a mid morning trip and didn't book in advance. However, I can understand that it may be risky to wait so recommend you book. Try http://www.alcatrazcruises.com/

I guess a night trip would give you fabulous views of the lights around SF. I enjoyed the day one though so just a matter of preference (or availability). Night ones may be more expensive.

thats a great idea, but we're off mid sept. I also hear there is a nice deli in bishop so might give that a go on our way up.
