Hi all, have been reading posts in this thread, but havent managed to get through them all yet, so apologies for any repeats!
I was after some thoughts on my road trip intinery and any ideas on places to stay/avoid...my OH and I are going middle - end sept and planning to
1.fly to phoenix - stay over one night
2.drive to grand canyon with 1 night stay in lodges
3. drive to vegas to arrive the next evening, stay 4 nights in vegas
4. drive to death valley and stay in furnace creek?
5. drive towards yosemite to stay a night somewhere nearby
6. 2 nights in yosemite
7. drive to monterey - stay 1 night
8. drive to san fran - stay 4 nights
we have got a great deal on flights from birmingham via us airways so might be worth others checking this out.
Also thinking of staying in Paris Hotel in vegas for £73 a night (inc fri and sat nights) I'll post this in the vegas thread tho to see what others think.
thanks for any advice.0 -
Re your trip:
fly to phoenix - stay over one night
2.drive to grand canyon with 1 night stay in lodges – you need to book a lodge very quickly. We have stayed at Best Western Squire Inn. It’s outside the park but this is not a problem as you just drive in an park up
3. drive to vegas to arrive the next evening, stay 4 nights in vegas - no idea what Paris Hotel is like. Lots of info on LV thread but we opted for MGM in the end. We have opted for $ payment not £
4. drive to death valley and stay in furnace creek? Not sure what this is like; we just stayed one night in a place called Lee Vining, not much there
5. drive towards yosemite to stay a night somewhere nearby – I think we may have stayed at a place called Bishop (hunter’s paradise)
6. 2 nights in Yosemite – you need to book this soon
7. drive to monterey - stay 1 night
8. drive to san fran - stay 4 nights – we have previously stayed outside in Oakland area and up in the Napa Valley region – Calistoga but city centre may be better (it will be quite pricy). Do you need 4 nights in SF? Alcatraz is a must!
This is what we’ve planned for this year’s trip. It’s hubby and me and our three sons are coming because it’s USA. They are 25, 20 and 17 and have loved our previous trips to the States.
We are going end of August (we have done similar trips several times). So far, I have booked the following (by the way, all these bookings can be cancelled if we change our minds about the itinerary/hotel)
On arrival, two nights at Hampton Inn and suites Buena Park
Day 2 – probably Universal
Day 3 travel to Las Vegas where we have three nights booked at MGM (check out
www.SmarterVegas.com)
Day 7 – travel to Sedona for 2 nights (not booked as yet; checking a few out at the moment)
Day 9 – travel to Scottsdale and 3 nights at Chaparral Suites (we have stayed here three times previously)
Day 12 – travel to Indian Wells for three nights at Miramonte Resort and Spa (stayed here in 2007)
Day 15 – travel back to LA for three final nights at Best Western Regency Inn Huntington Beach (stayed here for 2 nights in 2007)
Day 16 shall probably spend on the beach
Day 17 – Knotts Berry Farm
Day 18 – fly home
Hope you have a great trip! :j

Hi There,
Can i recommend you stay in Yosemite with the blue butterfly inn!
That is ONE fantastic B&B! As long as you are travelling kid free, just about 10mins outside yosemite park, 15 mins to the middle. Fantastic location and great place!

In Death Valley, stay at furnace creek, its basic but perfectly clean and pleasent. We had a great 1 nights stay over there and really worth while seeing the sites for a day!!!
any more info needed do let me know, we did similiar stuff just about 2 months ago!!!

Alcatraz is a must for us.. a bit gutted that our itinery doesn't allow us to go on a night tour, but never mind.. sure it will be fab at any time0 -

its one of our optional tours so going to do it with them.. a little dearer than doing it ourselves but there's things going on either side of it which makes sense doing it all together.. (plus less hassle for us!)
also, we are back to san francisco at the end for a 2 day extension so will leave more time to explore other things0 -
excellent news
Well have the best time ever, so jealous after doing 3 weeks there in May!!! I love the place, i wish I could win the lottery and go for months on end!
