Spend a night in a premier inn and try their new beds. Hypnos with built in topper - super King is £600. We have a waterbed and I want to swap for one of the premier inn mattresses!

I haven't had any issues with Warren Evans mattresses, as long as you realise that the sale price is the real price and not to buy anything when its at full price!

I have the John Ryan Artisan Naturals, which is above your budget, though their Artisan 1500 is just about there.

I adore my mattress, and the company was excellent to work with. I couldn't recommend them more.

I can second that. I have just bought a nice new King sized hypnos mattress with built in topper as used in Premier inns. They have a long guarantee. You can tell when its delivered that its a hefty quality item. I have to say that i have never slept so well . I was for a year or two previous having disturbed sleep patterns for various reasons. Now i just drift off and 95% of the time, i wake at 7.00 ready for work or whatever. It was definitely a worthwhile investment.

Note that if you are considering one, and using existing bedfram, check the hynos website in which it states specifications for existing beds to ensure that the guarantee remains valid and the mattress is properly supported.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

For that budget you should be able to get a really good quality mattress.

Pocket sprung and memory foam combined is popular. The main downside is that you won't be able to turn it over (since the memory foam is a layer on the top). Mattresses which can be turned have the potential to last longer in my view.

One option is a pocket sprung mattress with a memory foam topper which can be taken off.

Pocket sprung is certainly preferable to open coil and you will have a vast choice with an £800 budget. Anything above 1000 springs is good enough for most builds, but you should be able to get a much higher count for that budget. The numbers aren't everything - it's a bit like megapixels on a digital camera - there is a minimum you want, but huge numbers don't achieve a lot as you can only fit so many springs on one layer (I believe 2000 is the limit on a king size, but I may be wrong).

To help your back, you'll want to get one which provides sufficient support to give you a nice straight back. There's no industry standard for what 'medium firmness' means but it's a good place to start as it sounds like you are a medium build.

I prefer traditional style mattresses which are hand tufted (looks like bumps held together with buttons) rather than quilted (completely flat) but there are plenty of good quality mattresses of both types out there and it will certainly be quilted if you go for one with a memory foam top.

If we are getting technical, you'll want a mattress with hand side stitching, which is usually a sign of better quality than 'machine side stitching'. It's basically to do with how well supported the edges are.

The most expensive and famous pocket sprung mattresses are names like Hypnos and Vispring but there are plenty of lesser known brands which tick the right boxes for quality specs and will come inside your budget.

I would hope the OP had found one by now, they asked in March, it is now November..

I bought a Warren Evans mattress, the firmest one they do and it's great. I also have a John Lewis memory foam topper which was an extra £300 but now have the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on.

I used to get hip and shoulder pain but now I don't.

You can go into Warren Evans to try. They also have Tempur mattresses but mine is pocket sprung.
