We haven't changed the locks - I thought they were obliged to inform us before entering?!0

I would just ignore them. If it stresses you out don't even bother opening the emails to read.
As I have previously said, you have no contract with the letting agency. Without contacting the landlord again you have no way of knowing if they have fed the landlord the same horse !!!! they tried to feed you about periodic tenancies or not. The last time you spoke with the landlord whom you have a good relationship with she told you that a periodic tenancy is fine...I'd just leave it at that.
Even if the letting agency issued a Section 21 it does not end the tenancy, that can only be done by the tenant or a court. The Section 21 is just notice that the landlord might go to court to get an eviction notice...that's all. Would a landlord take a paying tenant who has already explained why they would prefer a periodic tenancy to court? I'd put money on the answer being no.0 -

Thought it was all sorted as I had a message back from the landlord saying that she was okay with it continuing on a periodic tenancy and wishing us luck with our house hunting, but have just received this message from the lettings manager

Good Morning,

We have tried to make contact with you with regards renewing your tenancy. As we have not come to an agreement or signed a new lease I have now placed your property on the rental market. If you decide to renew your lease again you may be charged an application fee of £275.00

We will be in touch later with regards what will happen at the end of your tenancy and in the meantime our lettings negotiators will contact you as and when they will need to carry out viewing in your property, they will always give you plenty of notice.

Then do not change them.
What does your tenancy agreement state(if anything)about access for "viewings"?
(5.4) That the Landlord or any person authorised by the Landlord or the Landlord's Agent may at reasonable times of the day on giving 24 hours' notice, (unless in the case of an emergency) enter the Property for the purpose of inspecting its condition and state of repair. The tenant shall permit the Property to be viewed on reasonable notice (of at least 24 hours) at all reasonable times during the final weeks of the tenancy.
(6.3) Within the last two months of the tenancy to permit the Landlord or any person authorised by the Landlord or the Landlord's Agent at reasonable hours in daytime to enter and view the property with prospective tenants or purchasers, having first given the Tenant a reasonable period of notice.0 -
This is just nonsense. The agent is not going to start wasting their own time and money advertising the property. They are just trying it on.0
