Just wanted to say on the subject of carers being a council carer for 15 years there are two sides to every story ......Things have changed dramatically since I did this very rewarding job as so many more eldertly and infirm to take care of ..cuts in budgets and lots more factors to consider ....I was given time slots for each patient but more often than not stayed longer than allowed as unforseen things would occur and I would stay as long as was necessary to sort it ...hence doing longer hours than I was supposed to and not getting overtime .Saying this I always tried to put myself in the patients position and think maybe one day I might need the same sort of help .
Apologise for the soapbox post ..but something I have always felt strongly about ..

Well done you for doing a very worthwhile job. :A:A No need to apologise, Nanny, that isn't a soapbox just telling it from experience. I do understand the constraints/cuts etc. It sounds like you had regular slots for your clients (please, nobody misconstrue that). Dads were never regular slots but on a when they arrive basis. There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for their appointments schedule. For my reasoning, to cut down on travelling time, you would go from A to B to C as in the next nearest appointment. This wasn't so. They would come from the town five miles away to see to Dad, return to the town and then come back to the village to attend to someone who lived near Dad. This added about 30 minutes to their visit, times that by four times a day. When I asked why, I was told that this is where the agency told them to go. I asked if it was because medication had to be given and was told it wasn't as their time slots were not always the same. In this example, nearly two hours a day were being wasted due to ill thought out timetables.

    Morning MKS :)

It was something they highlighted on dispatches. They worked out the hourly rate of when someone left home to their last visit that morning. The paid rate for the job was meant to be £7.20 hour but when they factored in the time between each visit this went down to £3.39ish. Carers are one of the poorest paid in society and when you think how much agencies charge :(. I know they have their overheads but it was also questioned in the program how much the CEO, I think it was, of one company was raking in. :o

Hourly rate for Dads' care was £34.

There are still lovely carers like yourself Nanny, my mum had a few. I think what is lacking these days is the continuity of the same person popping in and the absence of funding to provide enough carers to do the job well and unrealistic expectations of time management from those higher up. And lack of training too, especially about how important it is for people to take their meds correct times and how they should be encouraged to eat their meals, have a wash etc. I'm sorry if it sounded like I was putting the profession down as I wasn't it is those in charge that are accountable in my eyes.

It's something I feel strongly about too as watching the old lady on the program last night I had a few tears for her. They had put a hidden camera in her home with permission from her son. It was truly awful the lies the carer wrote in her log. But I know as in all tv programs they have to make a good story and they won't have picked the good carers to film those that stay the extra mile. ;)

MKS I do think agency carers are organised differently from Council Carers as we used to have regular meeting and communication with our supervisors on what was required by the patients ..saying that It was a long time ago 40 years :eek:and things are so different this day and age ...

It's all agencies now Nanny. :(

Unless you have palliative care nurses. My mum had a mix of both.

It is so different I am afraid....

Morning all - slightly chilly outside but it could get better.

An electric company are doing major work at the end of our road so our road has been blocked off for 2 weeks :j

The blockage starts at the end house but residents have access via the other end of the road - even though there are signs right across the road a few cars came hurtling down as usual last night and must have got a shock to see the barriers across the road, then have to do a reverse up the road and a 3 point turn in the allotment gateway :D before going all the way back up the road

It is eerily quiet, my ears are throbbbing
