It sounds like the common W10 bug where Cortana search disappears and clicking on Start has no results, does that sound right OP?
If it is there have been a few threads on MSE lately about the same problem and out on the web dating back months.0 -

No separate issue from showing as tablet mode.
Cortana fails to work or even show up, and clicking on the start menu results in nothing happening.
Sometimes occurs out of the blue, or from install/upgrade.
MS haven't resolved it yet, nor always do the fixes floating about on the web.

I had this problem and have posted on another forum. Since then I set up System Restore and this action initially cured the problem and it was working normally. I thought that was it normal service resumed.Bu NO yesterday Cortana and the Start menu have ceased to function and have disappeared. there is obviously a problem with Windows 10 and it would seem Miscroscoft don't and want to know how to resolve this issue.so what to do next is the question and it would appear this is going to be a reoccurring issue that won't be solved permanently by using the system restore0

interestingly I have a similar problem , I have 2 machines here , both using a hdmi switch and the mouse/keyboard via a usb hub with a switcher
if I flick from one machine to the other (machine not doing anything) , my whole taskbar and start menu have gone .
however if I flick the usb (K+M)_ over and back it returnsSave a Rachael

I thought I had resolved this issue when I ran the System Restore program, which put the start menu and Cortana back to normal. It worked for a while and then over the weekend it all went "Pear Shaped" again. I lost the search the web and windows start which is frozen and Cortana has disappeared again. there seem little point in running System Restore again as it would appear this is only a short term fix before it goes wrong again. What next? As another contributor has stated Microsoft are no help at all although Windows 10 is their baby.So what is the next step that is the question. Any ideas?. Maybe I should revert back to Windows 7 which caused me no problems which I presume I am able to do!!!0
