Not sure I understand the Run System Restore bit. System restore does exactly what it says on the tin, restores your system to an earlier date/time. If you have restored your system to "last known good configuration" for example and your Start menu is back to normal, what do you then do to make it disappear again? Have you allowed Windows updates to update automatically? Maybe it is an update that is the issue or causing the issue.
  • Just a thought , can you try Windows(Key) and R then enter Searchui.exe to see if that brings it back

  • Hi,

I've had this on two machines. Symptoms for me were, start menu wouldn't open, but task bar also (where the icons live) wouldn't show at all, or would be "frozen" and you'd just get the spinning mouse icon when hovering over it. If yours sounds similar give this a try ..

On both, I found that uninstalling Internet Explorer (YEs, odd I know.. ) sorted it. I use Chrome so no problem doing that personally. Edge is also an option (IE's replacement)..

Give it a try if you're stuck.. Follow these instructions:

    http://news.softpedia.com/news/how-to-completely-remove-internet-explorer-in-windows-10-488800.shtml

ps, you may need to do Ctrl-Alt-Del, open 'Task Manager' and then click file-> Run new task. Alternatively Windows Key + R might bring up the run dialogue also.
In there type "control appwiz.cpl" to bring up the Programs and Features option noted in the link above. From there you can run "Turn windows features on or off" and then uncheck IE 11.

Once you reboot the machine at the end of that process you should find things come back to life again. Now, I've not tried turning it back on after ( I never use Ie) but you could always try that...

Let us know how you get on!

Windows 10 have changed the way Windows Update works. The user now has very little control over any aspect of the process.

So, any updates causing this problem are down to MS, not the user.

Mine appeared for few days and then disappeared again yesterday. It's driving me nuts. Wish I hadn't bothered updating to 10.
