career break

I currently on a career break and I am having problems selling my career break to employers.

I took a career break at the end of last year and want to return to work in April at latest. I have started looking for roles now because I know the job market is tough at the moment.

I have done 2 short courses on my break and travelled. The main reason for my career break was just to focus on myself and to go back into employment when I am ready.

The response that I getting from employers is that I should have waited until got another job until I left my previous role.

How are you defining a career break vs giving up work and being unemployed?

This is key. It sounds like you're trying to pretty up a period of unemployment.
  • Yes I am not working at moment which is my choice. It was my choice to leave my previous job and I worked my notice.

I had alot going on in my life and needed a break. The job that I was doing was not what I wanted to do. The goal was take a break and get back into my preferred field of work.

Just sounds like you are hiding something tbh

  • What do you suggest that I say instead of career break?
  • I am not hiding anything. It was my choice to leave and I worked my notice.
  • I left my job on good terms and my references will be fine so I am not hiding anything.

My suggestion would be that you "big up" the travel, say that you took a year out to go travelling.

eta. I thought a career break was something you took whilst employed, not between employment. So at the moment, it sounds like a euphemism for unemployment.

  • I cannot say a year because I only been on my career break/unemployed since the end of last year.
  • OK then I was just say that I am not working at the moment and took time out for myself.
