Like it or not the vast majority of people would prefer some form of legal representation when making the biggest purchase of their life.
Not sure what you mean, but I chase my own solicitor and progression agent, who's chasing the other side. It looks like the other side is not chasing their own solicitor or anyone else.
I understand when it's taking time because vendor is looking for property for themselves. I was in chain before as FTB and my vendor needed two months to find something and everything took 4 months, but not because solicitors were slow. Exchange date was agreed in advance and there was no suspense.
Regarding transaction timelines in other countries, it's more about agreeing quickly when ones is going to proceed, signing pre-agreement with dates and paying something similar to deposit. Then you know all your dates, when are you going to sign final agreement at notary office and when you move. If it suits everyone, dates could be in a few weeks or few months, depending on expectations and situation, but there's not unknown like here.
And yes, finding a buyer can take longer, because people don't flip properties every 2 years, they buy flats/houses for long term. When I bought my first flat. I wasn't thinking about its resale value but whether it suits my needs. I wasn't queing with other buyers, I spent about an hour there with builder/engineer who advised me which flat to choose.

hmmm depends on the definition... usually days. If you are talking about actually moving in can be months but the main difference is the binding agreements.
Once offer is accepted it's accepted there is very little uncertainty about gazumping and so on without major financial loss from either parties!

My solicitor is still waiting on the contract pack from the seller... which I have been told has been sent but somehow is not there - what can I do to put pressure on the seller solicitor side to speed up the process? How many times these contract packs have to go back and forth?EU expat working in London0

You can't pressure the seller's solicitor directly, but the seller sure can - get in touch with the seller or their agent, complain that their solicitor is holding things up.0

Progression agent - person who is chasing both sides.
BTW, nothing moved with my transaction. I contacted the agent on Monday to get my weekly report and learned nothing. Buyers were supposed to get update from their solicitor, because no one else is able to, and I heard nothing back.0 -
