Try to convince her about other possible solutions for the dress, I am sure she will definitely understand.

Married 3 years ago and looking back and reviewing what I felt were the best decisions we made and what retrospectively I would have done differently, I will say that not spending a lot on the dress was one of the best decisions.

I bought mine on e-bay, from a Chinese seller for £100, and I was totally over the moon by what I got. It did require some alterations, but that only cost me an additional £20. The dress was truly lovely and I received compliments after compliments. Those who I confessed to the price were all genuinely surprised.

3 years later, I look at the pictures and still feel that the dress was beautiful, but I don't feel any guilt that it is now somewhere unknown in the loft. If anything, the one thing I would change is my OH's suit. We hired one but it really didn't fit him that well and I wish we had gone ahead and bought a nice fitting one.

Ha! A friend told me about his daughters wedding the other day.
The spending had been going crazy and he was rather worried about it all. He got a pleasant surprise though when he saw the price of the at is, until she piped up" that was hte deposit Dad"

If he doesn't put a limit on it, the spending will go on and on.

The parents I know who contributed to the wedding either gave their offspring a fixed lump sum or bought specific items but most couples paid for their own day.

My parents are paying for my dress. I asked what budget they had in mind. This is so that (a) I don't get carried away and (b) I know if I want a dress over the budget I will have to pay the extra.

Although I think 2k is a redic amount of money I would ask, what is she like normally? If she isn't the sort of spend loads of money on clothes then maybe you should ask why this dress is so important that she wants to call off the 'white wedding' - or is she just being a bridezilla? If this is out of character it must be important to her and is 2k worth putting a dampener on the wedding? Is she the type to look good in a bin bag or is she conscious of her looks? Could it be perhaps that she's dreading looking for any more dresses and feels this is the only one which will make her feel like a bride? If she's anything like me, I'm dreading wedding dress shopping and although I said 2k is redic I would spend that if I thought that was the ONLY dress to make me feel like a bride

Shouldn't the day be about 2 people coming together as one? Don't get me wrong, she needs to feel beautiful and confident but £2k on a dress which will only be worn once is absolutely absurd! surely she can find something similar online or in a discount shop?

You could try what I do for films to help the director focus...

'OK, so I guess we could go with the £2k dress, do you prefer to reduce guest count or move to a cheaper venue?
  • I am a girl, but I completely understand what you are saying. Talk to her that you can not buy this dress due to some reasons, I am sure she'll understand.
