Sorry to jump on this thread but I have just downloaded Libreoffice and I can't seem to open new documents in word or resave documents already saved previously. Have I done something wrong?

Why are you trying to open new documents in Word if you have Libreoffice? What do you mean by "new documents?"

I must be misunderstanding how it works then. I thought it would just work the same. I mean if I want to create a new document i.e. type a letter etc

It's ok, just realised what I was doing

I have OpenOffice and LibreOffice as I couldn't decide which to keep.
Never had an issue opening this 4.1.2 OpenOffice on my Windows 10 though.
But based on this thread, I'll uninstall OpenOffice.

Clincher: I just now confirmed that OO cannot open for editing a PDF file (you just see garbage) while LO can and in fact this is what I use it for among other things. With LO you can open a PDF with embedded images and text and with a small amount of faff, swap the odd image and edit (even bulk edit with find/replace across whole file) then save as ODG type file then export again as a PDF.

LibreOffice is the only free & easy way of tweaking PDF docs I know of.
