If they aren't a UK company, and they aren't, they are outside UK law, they can make any statements they want and there isn't much that can be done. They could turn around and say VAT stands for Variable Adjustment Tariff.

The OP agreed to enter the contract as governed by the laws of South Carolina, they will have an uphill battle to get any UK authorities involved.

Oh my gosh! Thank you all so much for your detective work! I really wasn't expecting so many responses! Its so lovely so many people are so helpful for a complete stranger! Its really appreciated.

A lot of people - mostly new posters - often pop up in here using words like "con" and "scam" and it turns out to be nothing of the sort.

In your case it is a shady company that me and others are happy to name and shame in the name of "money saving" and generally not letting these half baked "entrepreneurs" wheedle their way around the law, hurting legitimate businesses.

    So you're welcome.
