I am really dismayed at the really horrible comments made by many of the posters on here. Whatever happened to "being nice to all people" on here.
I should say that many of you on here need to read the rules of this site and abide by them. Stop jumping down peoples throats and be nice.
There is too much of this going on now and needs to be stopped. It makes it unpleasant to read and totally unnecessary.

All I've done so far was point out that a statement he made was incorrect and I said why it was incorrect. Don't think I've made any assumptions at all.

Couldn't agree more. Sounds like the [strike]tax collectors[/strike] police were simply cruising around on a revenue-raising exercise, looking for the softest and most lucrative targets they could find.
It's much easier work than catching real, serious criminals and it gets their detection figures up.
Whilst I'm not saying police never do 'revenue-raising exercises' or take opportunities to reach their targets etc as I have no idea if this really happens or not, it really doesn't sound as if this was the case for the OP as they let his friend off a clear offence (bald tyre) and didn't do him for jumping the light or (in their opinion) not wearing a setbelt either. If it had just been about revenue collection/meeting targets they would certainly have done him for the tyre if nothing else.
I think arguing back in this sort of situation is potentially a red-rag to a bull! Personally I'm at the other end of the spectrum in my attitude to talking to the police... I'm so polite to them that on the one and only occasion I have ever been stopped for speeding (in over 30 years of driving) I listened respectfully to the officer's patronising tone whilst lecturing me on the dangers of doing 40mph in a 30mph (I know the risks and shouldn't have done it so took the rap in silence) and automatically said 'Thank you' when she handed me a ticket!

He didn't say what colour they had changed to.
Fair enough, you're right the OP didn't explicity say they went through on Red. I think it was an inferrence considering the statement about what Amber means which is the only thing I responded to. Also the OP hasn't actually denied going through the red light when stating the police accused them of that. I merely pointed out the OP was factually incorrect about the statement they made (I'm not being arrogant but because I quoted the highway code) and I wasn't rude about it either. Not everyone has been rude to the OP but the valid points still seem to be ignored or at least no sign of acknowledgement yet."She is quite the oddball. Another rant while we're on the subject...
If the police want us to be 100% perfect drivers all of the time, they should lead by example and be whiter than white themselves.
This is not the case where I live. I regularly see police cars (not on emergency calls) breaking 30mph speed limits by more than 10mph, failing to indicate when they turn, going right up the backside of the car in front, parking in the disabled bay at Asda to pop in a buy a sandwich, and generally driving like discourteous and impatient thugs.
Only last week I was driving along, rigidly sticking to the 30mph limit because a cop car was behind me. He came really close and appeared to be shouting "come on, come on", and waving his hands at me. I edged up to 32mph because I felt initimidated and he came even closer. I felt like I was in a lose-lose situation, like I was being bullied into breaking the limit by the very people that take such pleasure in enforcing it. Now I wish with hindsight I had got his number plate and reported him, but obviously my word would never have stood up against his.
I bet half of these police drivers would be banned themselves if they were subjected to the same scrutiny they dish out to ordinary motorists.0 -

Yes I can

It seems to me that it is an unfortunate fact of life that police officers do often leave a lot to be desired when it comes to handling members of the public.
I know, from personal experience relating to driving issues, that traffic police are often bored and they are at times inclined to stop people for not much other reason than they were there at the time.
I regard police officers as managers of the environment. Sadly it is the case that many, not all, of them are lacking in the basic skillset of how to handle people. They all too readily can provoke a reaction from members of the public that with a little more care and attention would earn the officer some respect rather than the fear and hate that they often instill into people.
When police officers stop you they can concoct almost anything they want to. And, they have been known to exaggerate a point to suit their charge sheet.
However, placed in these circumstances is is better to bite your tongue if they are abusive or ill-mannered towards you. That way you will more than likely get away without being charged with anything. But, you should indeed take their numbers and you should register your distatste at their attitude at the police station or by writing to the chief constable.0 -
Davidboy i havent found a car thats willing to let out a lorry yet!! i dont drive lorrys but have to occasionally drive with a trailer so i get to see it from their point of view, its extremely difficult to pull out to over take when you are restricted to doing 60 mph yet the other cars overtaking are doing 70 80 or 90+. Its the cars behind that need to be compassionate and more patient rather then forcing them selves past because they can. Its also very difficult to see cars that come speeding up from behind remember they have 40 feet of trailer to see past first using just side mirrors.Thats typical from a lorry driver, no compassion or thought to anyone, 90% of which who are rude and arrogant to all other road users.
Mr lorry driver do you know you are suppose to LOOK in your mirror before overtaking on a motorway? Cos I aint found one that does yet!!
D
Yes you get some muppets in lorries but this is normally dwarfed by muppets in cars who think they know how to drive."Save the cheerleader - Save the world"0 -
I have a friend who works with an ex copper (was in the force decades) and apparently while on motorway patrol they play "snooker". Pull over cars of a particular colour for spot checks. Not sure if this was particular to that guy's force but I'm under no illusions that police aren't human and include all things that come with being human, good and bad."She is quite the oddball.
