no it doesnt increase the chances of it physically changing color, but it does increase the chances that you will have to make a judgement call to go through a just-changed amber light, as to stop at a higher speed and short stopping distance would be unsafe. therefore (As per the highway code) you continue through the amber light.

No. If you are going faster you get through the light quicker as it changes.

This is why traffic lights in a 30 zone and a 60 zone stay on amber for exactly the same time.
On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.

exactly... that was my point wasnt it?

if you get through it quicker as it changes then you have less time to stop , therefore there is a higher chance you will decide (rightly) to keep going rather than risk an emergency stop

Only a useless driver would need to do an emergency stop.

This constable was doing nothing. Standing there looking important. the female officer was speaking, the male constable was having an attitude, as she was to my friend, whilst in the police car. They both had a bad attitude, took his number but didnt get hers.
They had a attitude with the pair of you and your friends demonstration of poor driving because they are fed up to the gills with knocking on parents front doors at 0300hrs and telling them their beloved son or daughter is splattered all over a farmers wall and happened to injure or kill other innocent people passing by.
When you have cleaned up a few bodies you have no compunction in telling people like you the facts because people like you won't listen you have to be told.
Learn by you mistakes quickly or you will be on the next farmers wall, there's plenty of them in Wales.
    Red is do not proceed.
    Amber is stop.
    Green is proceed with caution.

If I am there and the lorry pulls straight out what can I do about it?! The lorry driver's a w****r who can't be bothered to look in his mirror (signals and immediately moves out) when I am clearly visible in it because I am in the next lane to him. Are you telling me it is illegal to overtake when in the lane to the right of the lorry? I am in the next lane so I am moving towards him at speed (which is what traffic in the next lane does), if he pulls out without looking it's his/her silly fault.

Searched for "closing gap" +motorway on google and nothing came up so no-one else has heard of it.quote]

Driving is about self preservation - you moaning about a wagon pulling out unexpectedly won't save you if the next one hits you. Rather than complain about it think about what YOU could have done to prevent the situation, then next time it happens you will be prepared.

Closing gap is taught on advanced driving courses which is why I suggested you did a course - how many motorway lessons have you had?

What's the difference between stopping and not proceeding?

    Red means do not move.
Amber means don't go any further.
Green means you can move now but watch out for idiots coming from another way when they have been told don't go any further.
What I am concerned about is all of these people can't understand red amber green and they are driving around and it has only now occured to them to ask.

Practically speaking it is well known that the other lights will not change until the current lights are Red. Hence a Red light means stop. An Amber means that a Red is imminent, but if the vehicle cannot stop in time it'll be better to proceed.

Actually, the highway code makes this very clear.
    http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/signs01.htm
AMBER means 'Stop' at the stopline. You may go on only if the AMBER appears after you have crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to pull up might cause an accident

That's not "don't go any further".

However - if I stop a car; and the first thing the driver says is; "Haven't you got anything better to do than harass motorists? Catch burglars/I pay my tax/you're just meeting targets blah blah blah blah BLAH -" then I may just deal with the situation differently.

So, let me get this right, if someone expresses their opinion, as they are entitled to do in a free country, or asks a legitimate question about your police force, this will cloud your judgement on how to enforce the law against them.

And you are BOASTING about that?

Your professional decisions should be based purely on the hard facts of the situation, not whether you like the person or whether you agree with their opinion.

It is NOT the police's role to judge people. That's why we have courts. The police are just there to gather straightforward facts and hand them over to the CPS.

We pay your wages, matey. The public are fully entitled to ask you why you're pulling them over instead of catching burglars. You're a public servant. Remember that.
