Hi all,
We are planning to upgrade - budget is £750K. Both DH and I work in London. So we are looking at max 40min journey into London. We dont want to spend more than £50 each per week in travel costs. We have kids so being near outstanding state schools is a must.
We are looking for a house with 4 bedrooms (atleast 3 doubles), downstairs toilet, separate utility and a separate study.
Can we afford to get this all somewhere nice within our budget?
We live in beckenham at the moment. The kind of properties we like are out of budget here:(

I think you'll struggle. You can get that near me but the rail fare is £73 a week/£280 a mth and that isn't including the tube. It also depends what type of house. 60s/70s houses that are quite close to neighbours & tick your boxes are 600-700k possibly a bit more in some villages/roads. More character & space between the houses and you're talking 850-950k but there isn't much available! Lots of "outstanding" primaries but secondary most are "good" although a couple "outstanding"
Also where in London? That 40min here will get you to KX easily (17-32min depending on train) but it depends where you need to go then!0 -
Milton Keynes? Luton? And send the kids to private school with the spare 400k ?0

Orpington fits all those criteria bar the travel costs, which are £9 a week more, but properties below the budget.0

£10 a day commute costs per person severely restricts your choices."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

I would say "no" once you include the £50 tops each travel cost.
YOu really shoudl say where in London. You might get into (say) paddington in 40 min but if you work in Canary Wharf add another 40 min and another fiver a day commute cost, OTOH if you work near Paddington, it would be fine.0 -
St albans or Harpenden. Guildford?
Issue will be your commuting costs. All those locations are £4 - 5k annual ticket0 -

You have 750K for a house and want all of the above (some far from essential) and yet you are only prepared to pay £10 a day commuting costs.. Something isn't right....0 -
