Very sharp scissors for all the moulded plastic... and other packaging that abounds these days. Also for cutting up lumps of meat into cubes for stew (suitably cleaned after the packaging of course!). Has so many uses, it is a must have in today's kitchen.

Spatula, pizza wheel, potato ricer/masher. Good knives.

I was just looking around my kitchen there, and those are the items I find invaluable.

    What a lovely gift idea!

I would not be without my silicone spatula. It's my most used utensil, I use my wok a lot, so it stirs without scratching, gets every last bit out of bowls and pans, flips things over, fab for stiring in the soup maker or getting dough out of the bread maker.. So good I have three, £4.99 each and worth every penny.
  • I have had my potato masher since I got married 16/2/1962 :) and it still is in good condition and works brilliantly I think it cost 2/6d from Woolworths at the time so it doesn't owe me anything I hate to think how many tonnes of spuds I've mashed with it :):):)over the years

I second a lot of the suggestions already posted.

Garlic crusher (wouldn't buy granules or frozen garlic) - I've had mine for probably more than 25 years (was expensive) and you don't have to take the skin from the garlic first.

Good quality knives - I have 3 knife blocks.

Plastic chopping boards (the glass ones ruin the edges of knives) - I have a set of 6 for fish, raw meat, cooked meat, veg, salad, bread/dairy.

    Wooden spoons/spatula

Ladle for serving portions of bolognaise, chilli, stews, soups from the slow-cooker.
  • Seconded ( or maybe fourthed!) for the Silicone spatula

Love my potato masher as well
    What a lovely idea btw.

What gets used most in our house:-

    Fish slice (not for fish)
    Slotted spoon
    Non-slotted spoon
    Tongs
Wooden spoon - I'd suggest getting more than one
    Colander
    Knives

    Used not so often:
    Spatula
    Pizza wheel
    Potato peeler
    Garlic crush
    Potato masher
    Grater

My kitchamagig http://hubpages.com/food/The-KItchamajig-A-Useful-Utensil-Reviewed I used to use it in the good old days, when deep frying chips was the norm, but now it's used for straining, serving, stirring, mashing. Mine has a plastic handle, (slightly melted from being rested on the edge of the hot chip pan!) I remember my mother having one with a wooden handle. If they are into vintage I think that you can still get them on sites like Ebay. Very handy multi use tool :)
